Loogootee Lions small, but no fluke
LOOGOOTEE, Ind. (AP)~ “Final Four high school.” Persons calling Loogootee High School this week are being greeted by a cherry voice intoning those words. And it’s the second time in five years the winner in the school’s front office have been able to use that particular phrse. The Lions of Loogootee are on their way tp Indianapolis and Market Square Arena, where they will bump heads with Columbus North in Saturday second semifinal game of basketball championship. And don’t think it isn’t going to school some of the more than a few television viewers when the Lions take the floor. When was the last time you saw a Final Four teqm with both starting fowards under 6foot tall? “We felt all along we were going to have a very successful team,” Coach Jack Butcher said. “We had a good nucleus coming back.” “But, being realistic, no one could have lined these boys up looked at their size and said they’d go this far. Being honest, I didn’t expect this type of season out of the kids.” However, looking at Butcher’s record, It’s pretty hard to argue with its success. lin 18 years coaching at his hometown high school, where he once played, Butcher’s team have won 81 per cent of their games. And the 1970 Lions led by a
Indiana Hall of Fame inductslOnewmembers
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inducted 10 new members Wednesday night, including high school Coaches Marvin Wood of Mishawaka, Bill Shepherd of Carmel, Bud Ritter of Madison and Jim Myers of Evansville Bosse. The others honored at the annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Indiana Convention-Ex-position Center were Woody Weir, Bob Downey, Walter Vance, Gus Doerner, Bill Johnson and the late Leroy “Cowboy” Edwards. Also honored were members of a 16-member Silver Anniversary team, announed earlier, and Indianapolis sportscaster Tom Carnegie, recipient of the Silver Medal Award. Wood, a native of Shelby County, has coached for 22 years and is past president of the Indiana High School Coaches Association and the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. ffront line that went 6;6,6-5,6-2, werent’s considered any kind of fluke when they made it to the State Finals. This year’s club isn’t a fluke, either. Only smaller than your average state finalist. The Lions have won 26 games this season, with only a forfeit to nearby bitter rival Shoals marring their record. That came about after a pushing match between the coaches in the first game caused Loogootee officials to cancel the second scheduled encounter against the wishes of Shoals people. The lineup that will start Saturday includes Butcher’s son, 62 Bill, and 6-foot Kenny Nigg at guards, 6-3 “big man” Mike Walls at center and 5-11 Mark riggins and 5-10 Kenny Mattingly at forwards. The reserves likely to see action are 5-7 Mike Wagoner and 6-IV4 Dave Strange. “I guess you’d have to say our only handicap is our size,” Butcher said. “But we don’t think, even in the finals, it’s am overwhelming problem.” “After all, we had to march through the tournament trail and we’ve met some outstanding teams along the way.” Referring to the general feeling that small schools play below their capabilities when facing big schools, “Butcher added “I think we kicked off the big school syndrome a long time ago.”
won three sectionals, two regionals, two semi-states and the state championship at Milan in 1954. He also coached at New Castle, North Central (Marion County) and Shelby ville. Shepherd, a native of Edinburg, was on the Indiana AllStar team against Kentucky in 1945 and lettered in basketball and baseball at Butler. He coached Carmel to the runnerup spot in the 1970 tournament. His two sons, Billy and David, were Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1968 and 1970, respectively. Ritter, who was starting center on two state championship teams at Evansville Bosse, later played at Purdue. He coached at Peru, where his teams won four sectionals, then at Madison. He has won 13 sectionals, four regionals and one semi-state. Myers, also a four-year starter at Bosse, was the Gimble Award winner in 1939. He later coached five years in grade school, 23 years in high school, won five sectionals, three regionals, one semi-state and the 1962 state championship at Bosse. Johnson, a native of Utica, Ind., is a graduate of Jeffersonville High School. He played at Indiana and coached at Jamestown and Angola. Butcher tries to keep the warmth of a proud father out of his voice when he analyzes the contributions of his senior son to the team. “We feel his value to the team goes beyond his scoring ability. He’s leading the team with 19 points a game, but he also has the great ability to get open and exceptional ability to hit the open man.” “He’s a complete ballplayer. I’m not prepared to agree because I haven’t seen everybody, but an assistant coach here says he’s the best defensive ballplayer this school’s ever had.” Butcher explained that each of his 'players has contributed plenty this season, particularly in tournament play. “Kenny Nigg came on real strong from the standpoint of leadership and sound, strong basketball in tournament competition. He’s one of several players that have given us better shot selections and he’s scoring about 12 points a game. “Mike Walls does more out there than a lot of people give him credit for, bdcause he doesn’t score that much. He’s not a great jumper, but he’s a fine defensive player and a great competitor. In the (Evansville semistate) championship game against Seymour, he scored 15 points.” Butcher went on, “Mark Riggins is willing to sacrifice personal glory for team success.
teaches. Edwards, a native of Crawfordsville, played at Kentucky and later in the National Basketball League where he was an all-star center six times. He was voted into the Helms Foundation College Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970. Weir, a native of Scottsburg, was all-Big Ten at Indiana in 1934. He later coached at French Lick, Jasper, Vincennes and Marion, retiring in 1949. His teams won 12 sectinals, 6 regionals and two semi-states. Downey, of Washington, Ind., played basketball, baseball, football and track at McKendree College in Illinois. He coached at Washington Catholic for 10 years, later became owner of a men’s shop in Washington. Vance, a native of Smith Grove, Ky., is a graduate of Logansport High School which won the state championship in 1934. He was an all-Big Ten player at Northwestern. He joined the Crawfordsville Jour-nal-Review in 1946 and was named publisher in 1959, a position he still holds. Doerner, of Mackey, Ind., is a graduate of Evansville College where he lettered four years in basketball. He played with the Fort Wayne Pistons and Indianapolis Kautskys before coaching at Fort Branch three years. He started a sporting goods business in 1954.
He’s done a tremendous job on the boards in tournament play and, even though he only takes five or six shots a game, he can put it in the hole when a basket is needed.” “Ken Mattingly is only 5-10, but everybody recognizes he can play like 6-4. He’s scoring 13 points a game and he’s a tremendous performer.” Butcher says the tiny Wagoner is “an entertainer” and
Dantley, Notre Dame face 4th ranked Maryland tonight
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Basketball may be a team sport, but the NCAA Midwest Regionals opening tonight here also will be a showcase for some of the finest individual cage talent in the land. The lure of watching the likes of Adrian Dantley, Junior Bridgeman, John Lucas and Steve Collier do their “individual thing” will be the drawing card that brings many of the fans to the Pan American Center on the New Mexico State University campus. The regional meet opens tonight as Collier and the Cincinnati Bearcats take on Bridgeman and the Louisville Cardinals at 9:05 p.m., EDT. Dantley and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish challenge Lucas and the Maryland Terrapins at 11:10. Louisville enters the tourney with the best mark of the four teams at 25-2 and is ranked third nationally. Maryland is 23-4 and fourth rated while Notre Dame is 19-8 on the year
Ali training lightly for Wepner clash
CLEVELAND (AP) - With their fight for the world heavyweight title drawing near, champion Muhammad Ali expressed boredom after a workout and challenger Chuck Wepner skipped training to go to the racetrack. That’s the way it was here Wednesday, six days before Ali meets Wepner at the Cleveland Coliseum. “A fighter is like a race horse. You gotta pace yourself,” said Ali, who sparred six

Strange is “a sound basketball player.” Looking beyond Saturday, it might be of interest to those in southern Indiana that Mattingly and Nigg are juniors and Wagoner and Strange sophomores. As Butcher says, “We’re probably going to be able to compete for the next couple of /ears.” LOOGOOTEE, Ind. (AP)Here are the results of this
and ranked ninth. Cincinnati, 22-5 on the year, is the country’s 12th-ranked squad. The winners of tonight’s games advance to the regional title tilt Saturday afternoon to play for a berth in the final round of the NCAA playoffs along with the other three regional winners. Tonight’s losers will end the season Saturday morning in a consolation game. Bridgeman, Collier, Dantley and Lucas all were outstanding during the regular season, and their play in last week’s opening round playoff games gave the fans an inkling they also are tourney players. The 6-foot-5 Dantley, one of the nation’s top scorers, dumped in 33 points to lead the Irish to a 78-71 win over Kansas while Lucas, an All-America guard, tossed in 19 points as the Terps riddled Creighton and its zone defense 87-79. Bridgeman, a 6-foot-5 leaper who plays both forward and guard, hit a personal high of 36
rounds while Wepner was at nearby Thistledown watching race horses pace themselves. “You don’t train for every man the same way, or you’ll burn yourself out,” said Ali, who has trained lightly for his first title defense since he knocked out George Foreman in Africa, a fight for which Ali trained four months. “I’m not satisfied with my condition,” said the champion, who weighs between 225-230 and is carrying a slight paunch.

Collier, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard, tallied 20 points to lead the young Bearcats past Texas A & M, 87-79. “If the people don’t come out they are only hurting themselves,” Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps said at a news conference Wednesday night. Only Louisville appears to have players with injuries serious enough to keep them on the bench.

But the Bearcats have reeled off 16 straight wins since the loss. Maryland bounced Notre Dame 90-82 in their meeting. The Irish, however, also use freshmen and sophomores to compliment Dantley.
