St. John's ‘slips'past Manhattan
NEW YORK (AP) - A funny thing happened to Mel Utley on the way to the basket. He slipped. A not-so-funny thing happened to the Manhattan basketball team on the play. The Jaspers got called for a foul. Utley got up and with the game on the line, threw in two free throws in the last eight seconds to give St. John’s a tingling 57-56 victory in the
'You gotta believe' they're going to operate on McGraw
By 808 GREENE AP Sports Writer Relief pitcher Tug McGraw still believes. When he was a member of the New York Mets’, McGraw’s remark “You gotta believe!” became the rallying cry of the fans as the Mets went on to win the 1973 National League pennant. Tuesday, the left-hander, now with the Philadelphia Phillies, checked into a Philadelphia hospital for tests prior to the removal of a lump near the lower tip of his left shoulder blade. “I’m leaving this up to the doctors,’ the 30-year-old McGraw said. “They say there’s nothing seriously wrong with me. When the doctors say it, well, you gotta believe, right?” In Tuesday’s exhibition games, it was the hitters who

I went inside to draw the foul and got it.” The victory, one of the most exciting in this 38th annual post-season classic, shot the Redmen into Saturday’s semifinals against Providence, a

South Carolina meets Princeton and Oral Roberts takes on Oregon Thursday night in another quarter-final doubleheader to determine the other two berths in Saturday’s semis at Madison Square Garden. Utley’s winning free throws came in the face of rowdy Manhattan fans, who waved their arms wildly behind the St.
Ed Herrmann also homered for the Pale Hose while Tony Perez slammed a roundtripper for Cincinnati. Milwaukee’s Bob Coluccio drove in five runs—four of them on two home runs—including the go-ahead marker in the ninth against Oakland. Joe Rudi homered for the A’s and Tom Bianco hit a two-run homer for the Brewers. A lead-off triple by Detroit’s Ron LeFlore and a wild pitch ended Montreal’s eight-game winning streak. LeFlore also had a home run while Bill Freehan hit a two-run triple and rookie left fielder Dan Meyer slammed a two-run homer. Reggie Smith drove in two runs with a homer and a triple as the Cards routed the Phillies. The Mets erupted for seven hits to score four runs in the seventh inning against the Red Sox. Tony Conigliaro, who has been out of baseball for years after being hit in the face by a pitch, slammed two doubles and a single in five at-bats for the Red Sox. Houston pitcher James Rodney Richard allowed only three hits through six innings as the Astros ended a six-game losing streak. Right-hander Ray Burris gave up only one hit—a bunt single—in the four innings he worked to lead the Cubs to victory. Randy Bass’ two-run double in the ninth lifted Minnesota to victory, and the Yanks swept their two-game series from the Pirates in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Doc Medich pitched six scoreless innings for New York, limiting Pittsburgh to one hit. that seven teams are already committed to the tourney. While Greencastle honors its committment to the Putnam County tourney the WIC will have the other six loop teams plus Van Buren. In the All-Sports race West Vigo presently has a tentative grip on first place with 29 points, hot pursuit being provided by Clinton with 28, Brazil and Schulte with 27, Greencastle with 25, Sullivan with 22 and State High with 8. But on an inbounds play, Tom Lockhart went in for an unneeded shot and missed, and the ball bounced to a St. John’s player. Manhattan’s Mike Young committed a foul and St. John’s set up a play with 19 seconds left. The ball was passed to Utley, and he drove for a shot with eight seconds remaining. Driesell: 'We're not scared of anybody'
By FRED ROTHENBERG AP Sports Writer Most of the horn tooting in the NCAA college basketball tournament seems to be happening before the games. The coaches of the 16 teams remaining in the tourney spent part of Tuesday beating their own chests, then doing a paraphrase on the old “the only thing to fear is fear itself” number. It’s part of the psychological buildup, and hardly anyone does it better than Maryland’s Lefty Driesell. “We’re not scared of anybody,” Driesell said. “And if we put it all together, people had better be scared of us.” The fourth-ranked Terps, 234, overcame pesky Creighton 83-79 last Saturday to earn a date with No. 9 Notre Dame, 198, for a second-round Midwest Regional game Thursday night at Las Cruces, N.M. The other Midwest Regional game pits No. 12 Cincinnati, 22-5, against No. 3 Louisville, 25-2. “This is a challenge to our ball club and they’ve fooled a
Catlett works away from shadow
CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) - Gale Catlett, whose Cincinnati Bearcats own the nation’s sec-ond-longest basketball winning streak (16 games), has finally removed himself from the shadow of his more famous former teammates—Jerry West and Rod Hundley. Fifteen years ago Catlett was a member of West Virginia’s high-powered basketball program. He was a sophomore who learned defense against West, then the nation’s leading scorer. “Hundley was my room-
program of girls sports, while the conference golf meet date jwas announced as May 20 at Sullivan, the loop track meet May 6 at West Vigo, next fall’s cross country meet Oct. 7 at Sullivan and the wrestling meet to return to Greencastle, the date to be announced later. Returning to the completed cage season the final standings were reviewed, which read as follows: Brazil 6-0, West Vigo 51, Sullivan 4-2, Greencastle 3-3, State High 2-4, Clinton 1-5 and Schulte 0-6. Vicars claimed the loop’s scoring title with 136 points.

referee thought so. “You want to know what happened?” Utley explained. “I slipped and banged into Charley. I was wearing someone else’s sneakers and my feet didn’t feel right.” The first game wasn’t half as exciting, but Providence gave evidence of its tremendous scoring power. Joe Hassett and Bill Eason each scored 18 points as six Friars hit double figures against a supposedly tough defensive dub. The game was over at the half, when Providence took a 57-38 lead after taking charge of the backboards.
lot of people all year long,” Driesell said. “People counted us out all year and then again after we lost two straight games to Clemson and North Carolina. “Now they’re counting us out again. They’d better not do that if they’re smart. We’re one of the best teams in the country and our record proves it.” Besides the Midwest battles Thursday night, there will be the East Regional at Providence, R. 1., which has Syracuse, 21-7 against North Carolina, 22-7, and Boston College, 21-7, against Kansas State, 19-8. Then, there’s the Mideast Regional, matching Kentucky, 234, against Central Michigan, 215, and Indiana, 30-0, against Oregon State, 19-10. And in the West Regional at Portland/ Ore., Arizona State, 24-3, plays Nevada-Las Vegas, 23-4, and Montana, 21-6, meets UCLA, 243. Maryland beat Notre Dame 90-82 in an earlier meeting this season and the Terps again will have to contend with AllAmerican Adrian Dantley, who
mate,” he said. “There was a great debate in those days who had the better program,” remembers Catlett. “West Virginia, with West and Hundley, finished as national runnersup in 1959, but then Cincinnati came along and began dominating.” Catlett, a reserve forward on the West Virginia club, has propelled Cincinnati back into national prominence. The 12th-ranked Bearcats, 225, confront Ohio River rival Louisville Thursday in the Midwest Regionals at Las Cruces, N.M. Cincinnati has the youngest team among the final 16 NCAA survivors. Three starters are freshmen and another is a sophomore. But Catlett contends his club isn’t content to wait for future glory. “They’re convinced they are going to win their next four games. I have to believe in them,” he said. Catlett, who served as an assistant under Kentucky’s
Lebanon wants to change welcome billboard with title
LEBANON, Ind. (AP) - For years a billboard along U.S. 52 outside this central Indiana community proclaimed: “Lebanon, home of 1966 Mr. Basketball Rick Mount.” If things go well this weekend, the citizens of Lebanon would like nothing better than to replace that billboard with one that reads: “Home of the 1975 State Champion Lebanon Tigers.” The lOth-ranked Tigers meet No. 3 Marion in the noon opener of Saturday’s State Finals at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. They got to Indianapolis by knocking off a pair of toughies at last weekend’s Lafayette semistate. Lebanon tipped No. 7 Michigan City Elston 59-56 in the first game and came back with a 59-50 triumph over defending champion Lafayette Jefferson in the nightcap. That ended three years of frustration for the school, since the third straight trip to the semistate for the Tigers proved the charm. They’re hoping their first trip to the Finals since 1943 is as successful, and the key appears to be a bright and talented 6-foot-5 forward named Steve Walker. The big senior isn’t about to make anyone forget Mount, but a state championship could place him right up alongside “The Rocket” in the hearts of his fellow townspeople. Coach Jim Rosenstihl sounds more like Walker’s public relations man when he talks about his star. But he appears to have
scored 29 points in that game. “Dantley is a great offensive player,” Driesell said. “In the last game, just about everybody guarded him. We’ll stick a lot of different people on him this time, unless one person does a good job.” But Driesell isn’t scared of Dantley or any combination of Dantley and four others. ‘We’re going into this tournament with a positive attitude,” Driesell said. “We realize that all it takes is four (more) games to win the national championship, and we think we can do it. “At this point, a lot of people would have had reason to be skeptical of us,” he said. “But they’d better look out for us now. “We’re not afraid of Notre Dame, UCLA, North Carolina or anybody that’s in this tournament.” UCLA, the giant of college basketball over the past 12 years with 10 NCAA titles, has an awesome reputation. Only Montana isn’t shaking with fright. “Our kids are excited and
Adolph Rupp, Maryland’s Lefty Driesel and Ted Owens of Kansas, has burst onto the scene with a splash. Only in his third season, the 34-year-old West Virginia native has rejuvenated a tradition-rich program which waned with the long absence from NCAA postseason play. He directed the Bearcats to a 19-5 record and a berth in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) last year, then faced one of the major recruiting tests of his career. Catlett responded by nabbing a multi-talented group of prep standouts who immediately cracked the starting lineup. After stumbling to a 3-2 start, the youths began blending with the leadership of 6-foot-a senior center Mike Franklin, who pulled down 19 rebounds in Cincinnati’s 87-79 NCAA opener against Texas A&M. The result has been a latestreaking club which was overlooked in national polls until the past week.

reason. “He’s just a fine all-around basketball player,” Rosenstihl said. “He can do as much for his team as any player in the state. He’s a good rebounder, has good anticipation and has a good physical body to play the game.” Walker has been a starter since the last few games of his freshman year and he’s been the team’s leading scorer each year since. Currently, he’s averaging 23 points a game and has connected on 55 per cent of his shots. Rosenstihl also pointed out that the older of the team’s two Walker brothers ranks fifth academically in a class of 230. His brother, Brian, a 6-1 junior guard, is in the top 10 in his class of 250. More important to the team effort, the younger Walker is hitting 16 points a game, as is his runningmate at guard, 5-10 Kevin Smith, a transfer from nearby Thorntown. Those three are joined on the starting team by a pair of players who Rosenstihl wasn’t really counting on before the season began. They are 6-7 center Dale French and 6-3 forward Steve Smith, no relation to Kevin. “We expected to have a good ballclub,” Rosenstihl explained. “After all, we had been to the semistate two straight years. But Dale French was a big surprise to a lot of people around here.” “He was 5-4 when he was a freshman and he wasn’t even a starter on the “B” team until last year.
practice has reflected that attitude,” said Jud Heathcote, coach of unranked Montana. “The boys recognize we’re definitely out-talented and we’re playing what is a living legend. “We’re going in a little apprehensive but not scared, if there is a difference.” Second-ranked UCLA advanced to Portland with a 103-91 overtime struggle with Michigan, while Montana scored a 69-63 victory over Utah State. Indiana’s No. 1 ranked Hoosiers raced into their secondround game with a 78-53 victory over Texas-El Paso, and although no team scares Bobby Knight’s boys, the Indiana
