the United States this year. The 21-year-old Tanzanian captured the mile at the Millrose Game and the Los Angeles Times meet and turned in 3:56.4 clocking the third fastest indoor mile in history last Saturday night in San Diego. Bayi reportedly had been planning to face Chicago Track Club star Rick Wohlhuter at 1,000 meters but changed his mind and will go in the 1,500meter event. He beat Wohlhuter, a middle distance specialist, in the San Diego meet at a mile and Olympic Invitational officials had hoped he would give Wohlhuter a rematch at 1,000 meters, a distance more to the American’s liking.
But Bayi has decided instead to stick to the 1,500 where he will face defending champion Byron Dyce of the Florida Track Club, among others. Wohlhuter, whose loss in San Diego was his first at any distance in more than a year, will be challenged by Keith Francis of Boston College and Villanova’s Ken Schappert at 1,000 meters. Miss Larrieu, who runs for the Pacific Coast Track Club, is coming off a record-breaking weekend that saw her cover the 1,500 meters in 4:10.4 Friday night in Toronto and come back the next night in San Diego with a 4:29 mile. Both marks are world records. Miss Larrieu goes in the Ms. metric mile, 1,500 meters, tonight where her competition will include Canadian school teacher Thelma Wright. Miss Wright won the last meeting between the two in 1973, High jumper Dwight Stones and dash man Ivory Crockett will be on hand tonight, both trying to remove unpleasant memories of the Millrose Games here three weeks ago. Stones, of the Pacific Coast Club, is coming off a world indoor record 7-5V2 leap last Saturday night in Oklahoma City. The lanky Stones suffered his only loss of the winter when Harvard senior Mel Embree beat him in the Millrose Games. Crockett, holder of the world 100-yard dash mark at 9.0, will be making his season’s indoor debut. He was supposed to go in the Millrose meet but bowed out in a dispute with officials over expense money.
