GEM TALES GARNET— The birthstone for those born in January; for those with the birth sign of Aquarius; or those born at the hour of 11 A.M. on any day. Most people are surprised to find Garnet occurs in any color except blue. It is found in South Africa, Brazil, Ceylon, Australia, Argentina, Mexico and Burma with small quantities in the United States. Russia's Ural Mountains are the major source of the finest grades but there is little or no mining going on now. As one of the earliest known gems the Garnet was thought to be of most use by grinding it into powder and using it as an ointment or poultice; red garnet being most effective for fever and green for jaundice. It was used to make bullets in Asia. The Persians believed it would protect and preserve the honor and health of the wearer, cure him of all diseases, and guard him from all perils during all his journeys. All these powers were doubled for the wearer born in January.

need for relief is too urgent to wait for organized channels to act. In such instances, help comes from the trustee’s budget. In a sentence, the trustee is still the presiding officer of the township. He is responsible for any property the township may own and he is the head bookkeeper. As a dispenser of funds, he pays the bills and on the other hand he collects amounts due his township. With his Advisory Board, he prepares an annual budget which is subject to review by local and state tax boards. Trustees are responsible for various reports relating to their office operations and must keep detailed records of all township business. A township trustee has the power to administer oaths necessary to the discharge of

his duties. It is also one of his duties to post notices of primary elections throughout the precincts within his boundaries. From the State Board of Accounts manual, it would appear that the township trustee is now charged with performing various and sundry, but necessary duties, which have not been absorbed by larger governmental units. Putnam Township trustees also meet another need which is not specifically set out in their catalog of legal duties, according to County Auditor John Carson. They are invaluable as contact and resource persons who help county government function as a unit. “When situations from out in the county are reported to our office,” Carson said, “I can always rely on our trustees to make on-the-spot evaluations or handle the matter.”
