Scientist inspects new South Pole station and newly-activated geodesic dome

An Indiana University research scientist has judged the new gigantic geodesic dome just activated on the South Pole to be safe, at least for the next 15 years. Robert Firenze, research scientist in the I.U. School of Public and Environmental Affairs, recently inspected the five-story aluminum dome built on a slowly moving block of ice, 10,000 feet thick. The new station will be the home of 18 scientists and support persons from the United States to shelter them against the world’s coldest temperatures-averaging 60 degrees below zero. (The

thought the old U.S. South Pole station would last as long as it did. They predict the new aluminum dome will last only 15 years. The dome forms an artifical environment for scientists to carry out their research, from monitoring pollutants in the ice cap to analyzing the natural anti-freeze that flows in the bloodstream of Atlantic cod. The outer shell of the dome, 164 feet in diameter, houses three two-story buildings and space for vehicle repair and industrial workshops. Electrical conduits, generators, water lines, and sewer lines are housed under small aluminum arches.

He studied the structural ability of floor supports to handle heavy equipment. Firenze estimated the problem of snow drifting against the sides of the geodesic dome.
