Counsil builds gymnastic powerhouse

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) —lt may come as a surprise, even to people in Indiana, but Indiana State University is No. 1. In college gymnastics, that is. Hie biggest reason for the rise to the top of the graceful and strenuous sport by the Sycamores is Roger Counsil— not exactly a Johnny Wooden or Ara Parseghian in national prestige. But the 40-year-old native of Wood River, 111., has built Indiana State’s gymnastics team into a powerhouse that is aiming for national recognition. .And he’s apparently got the Sycamores right on course. According to the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches, Indiana State is No. 1. “I feel like Bobby Knight, (basketball coach) down at Indiana i University),” Counsil said. ‘‘Being No. 1 now is nice, but it doesn’t mean much until after the final week of the season.

Bucks slow down Celtics but cannot stop

By 808 GREENE AP Sports Writer Boston’s running Celtics were slowed downed Wednesday night, but they still managed to post their 11th consecuive Na’ional Basketball Association triumph. ‘We did everything except run,” Boston Coach Tom Heinsohn said. “We were just standing around, especially in the second half. And that’s not our style.” The Celtics blew a 12-point second period advantage, but

Bv FRANK BROWN AP Sports Writer It took a while for Steve Shutt reach the 20-goal plateau this season, the main reasons being his “Doughnut Line” mates Guy Lafleur and Pete Mahovlich. The hulking Mahovlich tagged the trio with the odd nickname because they don’t have a center—although the 6-foot-5 Mahovlich usually plays that position ably. Anyway, Lafleur continued ins scoring rampage with his ilst goal of the season and three assists Wednesday night while Mahovlich added his 26th. But it took two by Shutt to reach the 20-mark and spark the Canadiens’ 8-5 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings in National Hockey League play. Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Flyers trimmed the New York Rangers 4-3, the Boston Bruins ti 1 the Atlanta Flames 3-3, the Chicago Black Hawks tripped the Minnesota Orth Stars' 2-1, the California Golden Seals dropped the Washington Capitals 5-1 and the Pittsburgh Penguins surprised the lx>s Angeles Kings 3-2. Both of Shutt’s goals came on backhand shots, both on passes h om Lafleur, both broke ties.

the Bucks had their own problems. “They don’t have real cohesion,” Heinsohn said of Milwaukee. “They don’t have anyone to replace Oscar... But that’s their problem. I’ve got my own.” The victory tied Buffalo for the longest winning streak in the NBA this season. And, it gave the Celtics a 37-14 record, best in the league. With center Dave Cowens scoring 17 of his 23 points in the opening half, the Celtics held a

The second, at 13:32 of the third period, broke a 5-5 deadlock and sent the Canadiens to triumph. Guy Mario Tremblay, Don Awrey and Yvan Cournover also scored for Montreal which expanded its Division 3 lead to four points over the Kings. Flyers 4, Rangers 3 Second-period power play goals by Ross Lonsberry and Rick MacLeish gave Philadelphia a 4-1 lead New York never overcame. Bruins 3, Flames 3 Surprise, surprise. Bobby Orr scored a goal for the Bruins. Thirty seconds later Carol Vadnais scored a goal for the Bruins, and what had been a 3-1 Atlanta lead was a 3-3 tie. Black Hawks 2, North Stars 1 Jim Pappin converted Darcy Rota's pass early in the third period to help Chicago drop Minnesota. ' Penguins 3, Kings 2 Chuck Arnason scored two of Pittsburgh’s three second-peri-od goals which led Pittsburgh to a comeback 3-2 victory and handed Ix>s Angeles its second consecutive loss.

“Still, it makes our kids, myself and—hopefully—the whole community feel good for the time being. I just hope we can hang onto it through April 5.” That’s a significant date, Since it’s the day on which the national champions are scheduled to end at, of all places, Indiana State. What placed the Sycamores at the top of the ratings was a 218 score against Oklahoma early in the Season—the best dual meet total in the nation this year. Indiana State has been competing in the sport for 12 years, 11 of them under Counsil. And the entire time, the Sycamores have been in the shadow of relative obscurity, even on the Terre Haute campus. “I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into when I came here,” Counsil explained. “But I had performed for Southern

56-47 advantage at halftime. Then Kareem Abdul-Jabbar found the range, hitting 19 of his 29 points in the final two periods. After Cowens’ 20-foot jumper with 32 seconds left made it 9288, Abdul-Jabbar retaliated with a hook shot seven seconds later. The Bucks’ center then blocked JoJo White’s layup attempt and the Bucks had the ball and a chance to tie the game. But Bobby Dandridge’s jumper from the right side of the lane missed as time expired. Illinois against Indiana State in three sports and always found them to be friendly, but competitive, folks.” His time at Indiana State has been well spent, with his teams compiling a 109-35-2 record going into th.‘ In fact, his last two teams won 22 of 24 dual meets While earning the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the National Collegiate Athletic Association finals in 1973 and 1974, respectively. The Sycamore schedule this season is a killer, with traditionally tough schools like Oklahoma, Dlinois State, lowa and Arizona State dotting it. In fact, the only Indiana State loss in its first eight dual meets this season was a 217-216.5 defeat at the hands of then thirdranked Louisiana State. “We lost one meet in each of the last three seasons, and this was the year I was hoping we could make it through undefeated,” Counsil said. “Actually, I didn’t feel that way until the season was almost here. “We had lost seven seniors, including three All-Americans and a national champion, by way of graduation,” he added. “And I thought we were in for a rebuilding year, as the sports writers say.” However, Counsil is quick to add, “As luck would have it, we struck it rich in recruiting last spring and came up with the best group of freshmen we’ve ever had. And here we are 7-1 and only two months away from the nationals.” The man who was named NCAA Mideast Coach of the Year in 1969, 1973 and 1974 has gathered together a group of athletes from 10 different states. He’s got plenty of “horses,” but Counsil labels all-arounders Kurt Thomas of Miami, Fla., and Doug Griffith of Franklin, Ohio, “my first two interrtational-caliber athletes.” Thomas is a freshman who was third in the National Junior Olympics last year, and Griffith is a junior who transferred from the U.S. Naval Academy. Counsil, recently elected chairman of the NCAA gymnastics committee, has coached 21 All-Americans and sue national champions in the past six years—facts which mean a great deal to him personally and in recruiting. “In gymnastics,” Counsil pointed Out, “being an AllAmeriean is an objective thing. The guys that finish first through sixth in the six events get the laurels. “Gymnastics is a sport where you can’t snow a group of voters. You are or you aren’t among the top six,” he said. What Counsil isn’t saying is that there is a good chance enough Sycamores could earn All-American honors in April to keep the team right at the top.
