Laskowski-super sub or superstar
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - John Laskowski clearly Remembers the day he first learned the term “Super Sub.” He was a hospitalized grade school kid in South Bend. “Morn brought me a basketball magazine in the hospital,” recalled the No. 1 clutch performer on Indiana’s No. 1 ranked team. “And I read this article: ‘John Havlicek—Super Sub or Superstar?’” Time marched on. Havlicek became a starter. So did Laz—and a record scorer—at St. Joseph High School in South Bend. Then one day he clicked on the radio. “I heard about this kid at Michigan City, and he didn’t like to start,” Laskowski told the Chicago Tribune recently. “Said he liked to come into the game after about three minutes. My only thought was, ‘Wan ji'd hate to be the starter’ he replaced.” That was the extent of Laskowski’s “Super Sub” background...until he entered Indiana and became basketball’s best sixth man since Havlicek was cominr off the bench for the Boston Celtics. It’s actually hard to understand how Hoosier Coach Bobby Knight can keep from asking Laskowski for 40 minutes a game. The long-armed, quickreacting, 6-foot-5,185-pound senior guardforward leads Indiana in field goal percentage with .653 on 47 of 72 attempts and in free throw shooting with 15 of 16. He’s averaging nearly 10 points a game, despite averaging

Thorobreds still pacing college division
By The Associated Press Once again, the Kentucky State Thorobreds have finished lengths ahead of the field. Kentucky State, the favorite with 27 consecutive regular season triumphs, romped over New Orleans by a margin of 92 votes to retain the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press college basketball poll, released Wednesday. The purse, which consisted of 20 first-place votes and 344 points, was awarded on the strength of Kentucky State’s two victories last week. Coach Lucias Mitchell’s Thorobreds, 9-0 through Sat. Jan, 11, edged Wabash 78-69 and blitzed Lincoln, Mo., 91-68. New Orleans, 10-0, was a strong second, claiming five first-place votes and 252 points from a nationwide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters after edging Southern

Jackson State held fast to the No. 4 slot, collecting one firstplace vote and 162 points for defeating' Daniel Payne 106-73 and Alcorn State 109-97. Next was The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, up a notch from last week with 135 points. The Moccasins were stomped by Southern Florida 103-87, but recovered to trample their next three opponents, flattening West Florida 133-100, Eastern Illinois 99-78, and Mercer 84-83. There was a wholesale reshuffing among the other ranked schools. Southern University at Baton Rouge, 11-0, vaulted from 10th

only 20 minutes of playing time a game. “If John wants to start,” Knight has repeatedly said, “all he has to do is ask mensrikll start himn” Laskowski begins each game on the bench next to Knight. He hasn’t asked to start because he really prefers not to. “Yes, I really prefer to start the game on the bench,” Laskowski explained. “I started three games in the tournament (Conference jcommissioners’ Association) last year, and I was too aggressive. I made three fouls in about four minutes.” -Some of the most important moments in his basketball life occur during those opening minutes he spends on the bench. -“I study the pace of the game,” Laskowski said. “I study opponents for defensive weak points. Just before I go in, (Assistant) Coach (Dave) Bliss tells me things he’s noticed. I add that to w at I’ve seen.” Thinrs really happen when Laskowski steps onto the floor. “I’m fresher than anybody,” he explained, “and I realize I’ve got to pick ’em up. I’m used to it. I’ve been doing it for three years.” Sometimes he replaces guards Bob Wilkerson or Quinn Buckner and other times forwards Steve Green cor Sc Mas. -And in his three years of part-time play, the Hoosiers have won 60 of 71 games, grabbed one Big Ten title and shared another one.
