FRIDAY, NOVEMBER »,1»74, THE PUTNAM COUNTY ■ANNEE-GRAFHIC 31
UCLA still cream of western collegiate cage crop, but.
The following is the final article of a series previewing the upcoming collegiate basketball season at major universities by Sam Goldaper for the New York Times News Service. The series has moved across the country to conclude here in the westernmost regions. Southwest Houston again is the class of Texas and the surrounding territory. This is the Cougars’ final season as an independent. They join the Southwest Conference next year. Meanwhile, Houston, which has been involved in 10 postseason tournaments in the last 14 seasons, retufns three starters, two part-time starters and some talented freshmen. Louis Dunbar, who at 6-9, the nation’s tallest guard, heads the returning cast. He averaged 21.7 points and 8.5 rebounds. Also back in coach Guy Lewis's run-and-gun offense are Otis Birdsong, a 14.3 scoring guard, and 6-10 Maurice Presley. In the S.W.C. it’s easier to predict Rick Bullock of Texas Tech as the best returning talent than trying to select the conference champion. The 6-9, 240-pound Bullock averaged 21.4 points and 10.7 rebounds. His presence make the Red Raiders the co-favorite in the guesang game with Texas A&M, which as seven of its eight players back from a 15-11 team. Rockies Eric Money and Coniel Norman of Arizona and Mike Sojourner of Utah signed with the pros prematurely. Their loss has created a scramble for the Western Athletic Conference title among Arizona, Arizona State and Utah. Idaho State is the favorite for a second straight Big Sky championship and Utah State
heads the class among independents. Arizona claimed the youngest team in the nation with four sophomores and one freshman. Bob Elliot, 6-10, the freshman, showed his makings of greatness when he scored 39 points and grabbed 25 rebounds against Arizona State. In coach Fred Snowden’s 10-player talent parade there is also Al Fleming, 6-8, Jim Rappis and Herman Harris, the best one-on-one player in the W.A.C. Even though Arizona State lost three inside starters there is optimism as the Sun Devils opened their .new $8-million, 14,227-seat arena. Lionel Hollins, an all-league selection and a 17.3 scorer, and Scott Lloyd, a 6-11 junior, are the best. At Utah, Jerry Primm, the neiv coach, has the talents of Ticky Burden, Charles Menatti and Doug Terry to challenge with. The 6-2 Burden, a standout in a wide open game, was 16th nationally in scoring (23.7). Steve Hayes, a 7-footer, and Dave Allen, 6-9, who averaged 20 points for the junior varsity, are the big hopes at Idaho State. The Bengals have the backcourt in Kevin Hoyt and George Rodriguez, but the front court is the question. Utah State won 14 team games at home but were a 2-10 road team. Three starters and seven of the nine top scorers, the best of whom are Jimmy Moore, a 6-7 forward who can leap and 6-6 Rich Haws. The Aggies are counting on Ed Gregg, a 7-foot redshirt junior, to mature quickly. Far West Since the Pac-8 has grown to one of the toughest conferences in the nation, and U.C.L.A. has lost Bill Walton and three other starters, the hopes of rival coaches have increased.
But outside the Pac-8 there is little belief that the dynasty will end. There is too much respect for John Wooden’s coaching and his young, big talent. Southern California, which returns 10 players, and has added five outstanding freshmen, and Oregon, with its entire starting team back, have been given the best chance at dethroning tlie Bruins. The Trojans have Gus Williams and Biff Burrell for an experienced backcourt and a big front line of Bob Trowbridge, John Lambert and Clint Chapman. Additionally, Earl Evans, 6-7, a 25.1 scorer and 20.6 rebounder, at Port Arthur, Tex., and Steve Melovic, a 18.7 scorer at Phoenix, are outstanding freshmen. The 6-4 Lee is the key to Oregon’s experienced Ducks. One of the nation’s best, Lee has put together 18.7 and 18.8 freshman and sophomore scoring seasons. Nevada, Las Vegas and Seattle figure to be locked in battle for the West Coast Conference title. The Rebels’ “five fabulous freshmen” of a year ago-Eddie Owens, Lewis Brown, Jackie Robinson, Jeep Kelley and Glen Gondrezickare sophomores, schooled in the ways of coach Jerry Tarkanian. Bob Batts, a transfer from Hawaii, Ricky Sobers, a holdover, and promising freshmen, Mat Porter and Phil Paramore, will help. Seattle will counter with Frank Oleynick, the nation’s seventh best scorer (25.1), Eddie O’Brien, to feed him passes, Jerry Lee, a 6-8 redshirt and freshmen, Keith Harrell, Jerome Maultsby, Carl Washington and Kevin Souther.

Los Angeles State and Santa Barbara are Pacific Coast Athletic Conference dropouts and Long Beach State needs to replace five starters. That leaves Fresno State and
Pacific to battle for top honors. Fresno State has three starters back, 6-7 Roy Jones, 6-10 Bruce Henning and 6-1 Dave Cumberland. Pacific is counting heavily on Keith Young, a
transfer from Minnesota, to go with Gary Dean, Chad Meyer, Ron James and Leonard Armato. Hawaii, an independent, could be awesome. The
Rainbows have collected players from all over and they are big and strong. The front line will have Barker, the nation’s best junior college player, Jimmy Baker, a
transfei from Nevada, Las Vegas, and Melton Wertz, both 3-9. The backcourt is the question, and Vic Kelly, the 5-6 Southern California transfer, may be the answer.
