But league s financial woes continue

Blazers, Hawaiians claim opening round WFL playoff victories

By HOWARD SMITH AP Sports Writer The World Football League, hoping to attract to its postseason games some of those paying fans who stayed away in droves during the regular season, kicked off its playoffs Thursday night with Florida and the Hawaiians posting victories. The Blazers dumped the Philadelphia Bell 18-3 and the Hawaiians topped the Southern California Sun 32-14. But if the WFL is looking to the playoffs to patch up some of the financial leaks in its rapidly sinking ship, it better look again. Sun officials announced a paid crowd of only 11,430 in a light rain at Anaheim, the team’s lowest turnout of the year, while just 9,712 fans showed up in Orlando for the Blazers’ game.

Meanwhile, the WFL’s financial picture, none too bright to start with, got still bleaker Thursday as the Internal Revenue Service continued to lean all over the league. The IRS filed a $105,551 lien against the Jacksonville Sharks, claiming

the club owes at least that much in back taxes. The IRS earlier had filed liens against Birmingham and Portland, and a spokesman said if the WFL teams do not make good on the money, the IRS could foreclose on the fran-

chises. The IRS claims Birmingham owes 237,000 in back taxes and has reportedly filed a claim for an additional $160,000 against owner Bill Putnam. The city, county, state and a local bank also have lodged claims

against the Americans. The IRS is after Portland to the tune of $168,000. Players, many of whom haven’t been paid in weeks, were supposed to divide 70 per cent of Thursday night’s gate receipts among them. Florida

and Philadelphia players were expected to get about $743 each while Hawaiian and Southern Cal players were supposed to get $662 apiece. Both Memphis and Birmingham drew first-round byes. Memphis hosts Florida next

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Losing records and poor showings be hanged, it’s time for the 50th annual Old Oaken Bucket football game between Purdue and Indiana. And even more than usual, the success of a season is on the line for both teams. This time it’ll be the Hoosiers busing the 110 miles from Bloomington to West Lafayette to do battle with the Boilermakers before a partisan crowd in Ross-Ade Stadium Saturday. Purdue 3-6-1, a somewhat-less-than-sellout crowd of 64,000 is expected to be on hand. “It’s been a disappointing season for us,” said Purdue Coach Alex Agase. “But this game is a season in itself.” Both Agase and Indiana Coach Lee Corso are in only their second seasons at their respective schools, but they

know what the “Bucket” game is all about. “The tension in preparation (last year)...it was like getting ready for the Rose Bowl or the conference championship,” explained Agase. “I really didn’t know how much the game meant, although I was aware of the rivalry at Northwestern. You can’t know until you live

through it.” Corso said it a different way. “Our program has come a long way and made some great strides this season and a victory over Purdue means a lot in recruiting and a lot to carry over to next season,” he said. Despite its record, Indiana has played some impressive football in recent weeks

Three way tie at World Cup

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Two ailing Englishmen, a pair of long-hitting Japanese and a diminutive South African backed by his partner sought to break a three-way team tie today in the second round of the 22nd annual World Cup Golf Tournament. England’s Peter Townshend and Maurice Bembridge, Japan’s Masashi Ozaki and Isao Aoki and South Africa’s Bobby Cole and Dale Hayes all shot three-under-par 137s Thursday in the opening round of the tournament at the 6,763-yard, par-70 Lagunita Country Club course. ' Cole shot a 66 to take the lead in the individual standings, followed by Ozaki with 67 and Townshend and Ramon Munoz of Venezuela with 68s. Trailing the three leaders in team standings were Venezuela and Scotland, each with a par 140. Scores in the four-day tournament are being kept on both an individual and team basis. The team competition is based on the best two-man total for 72 holes. The player with the low 72-hole score will be the

individual winner. PGA champion Lee Trevino and U.S. Open champ Hale Irwin, who make up the favored U.S. team and are defending the title won last year by Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller, managed a three-over-par 143. “I played like a dog,” said Trevino, who shot a topsyturvy round with a three-over-par 38 on the front nine and a

recordtying 32 on the back nine. “Considering the way I started off, I’m happy.” “Lee and I played about as poorly as we could play,” said the bespectacled Irwin, who hit his drive out of bounds on the par-three second hole and wound up with a double bogey. “I’m really embarrassed,” said Irwin, who finished well back with a 73.

Tiger soccermen net post season honors

Three DePauw University soccer players have been named to the all-state soccer team. Announcement of the honors for Jim LoPrete, Bob Greising, and Terry Tobin was made today by DePauw soccer coach Page Cotton. The three student athletes’ selection earns them a playing spot in Saturday’s Indiana East-West all-star game that will be played at 2 p.m. at Marion College in Marion, Ind. LoPrete, Greising and Tobin

will play for the West team composed of Hoosier collegiate stars from the western portion of the state. A comparable team of 15 players will perform for the East. Earlier this week Tobin, Joe LaGro, and Dennis Megwa were dted for all-conference honors by the Illinois-Indiana Soccer League. Tobin and LaGro were selected on the first team. Megwa received a nod for the second team, according to Cotton.

Oregon AD drafts proposal

Anybody for single platoon football?

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — There’s a way to tackle the inflationary costs pinching the pocketbooks of university athletic departments across the country. It’s called single-platoon football, and Athletic Direcor Norval Ritchey of the University of Oregon has drafted a proposal that would bring about the change. “It would basically ask the NCAA’s rules committee to return us to one-platoon football,” Ritchey said. “This would, first, save you many, many thousands of dollars. It also would help equalize competition.” And, he said, “It would lead to a return of player recognition by the fans. As it stands now,” he said, “people don’t recognize who they (players) are. What we’re talking about is limited substitution.”. “We know of seven of the eight Pacific-8 Conference schools who favor the proposal now,” Ritchey said. The lone exception is

the University of Southern California, where Coach John McKay is opposed, the Oregon athletic director said. At Oregon State, Athletic Director Jim Barratt said he, too, favored the idea. “The only panacea I can see for this galloping inflation is a return to one-platoon football,” he said, “and I’m going to fight for this at my own university, at the Pac-8 level in December and at the NCAA level in January” meetings. “I feel we can retain the same income with one-platoon football and also save ourselves about $200,000 annually,” Barratt said. Barratt said more and more major universities “are swinging this way. I see a snowballing effect. Even Bear Bryant of Alabama has come out publicly and said he may have to go to one-platoon football.” Ritchey added names such as Joe Patemo of Penn State and Frank Broyles of Arkansas as favoring the change. “Oregon and Oregon State are not unique across the country in facing financial troubles,” Ritchey said. “Of 119 major colleges in NCAA Division I, I would venture to say about 100 are in some sort of financial trouble, whether they know it or not.”

against No. 3 Michigan, No. 15 Michigan State and in a magnificent, albeit unsuccessful, comeback against Northwestern. On the other hand, Purdue is coming off a 51-0 pasting by Michigan and is severely hampered by a large injury toll in recent games. Purdue leads the overall series between the schools 47-23-6 and has a 33-13-3 edge since the Old Oaken Bucket was put up as the game prize in 1925. And seven of Indiana’s victories came in an eight-year span from 1940-47. Corso said the Hoosiers appear in good physical condition for the game.

Friday while Birmingham entertains Hawaii next Wednesday. The winners will meet in the World Bowl Thurs., Dec. 5, at a site to be determined later. Florida got ail the points it needed to win the first time Philadelphia got the ball. Bell running back Claude Watts fumbled on his own 32-yard line, Blazer safety Rickie Harris scooped the ball up and raced 32 yards for a touch-

down.

Quarterback Bob Davis connected with. Greg Latta on a 45yard pass play for the other Blazer TD and Dave Strock added a 24-yard field goal. Jerry Warren accounted for the

Philadelphia offense with a 37yard field goal. Southern California got off to a rocky start even before the kickoff when running back Kermit Johnson, the team’s leading rusher, and guard Booker Brown failed to show up for the game. No reason was given for the absence of the two rookies, but Coach Tom Fears said both were suspended. The Hawaiians raced to a 170 lead and were never headed. A1 Davis ran for a pair of shortyardage touchdowns and Randy Johnson tossed two scoring passes for the winners.
