Pacers dominate boards to deflate Spirits

By TV Associated Press If a team gets just one shot at the basket, chances are it’s not going to win. Hie Indiana Pacers used that maxim in the second half and beat the Spirits of St. Louis 117M§ in American Basketball Association action Sunday night. ”We were beaten tonight on the defensive backboard," said Spirits Coach Bob MacKinnon, pointing to a 2W0 Indiana edge “Indiana was holding us to one shot most of the second quarter and for the entire second hatf.” Elsewhere in the ABA Sunday night, the Denver Nuggets whipped the San Diego Con- * quistadors 12S-101 and the C Memphis Sounds nipped the

San Antonio Spun 91-M in overtime. Freddie Lewis scored X points for the Pacers and Darnell Hillman poured in a ca-reer-high 2S. The Spfaits built up a 14-point lead midway through the second quarter before Indiana stormed back on Hillman’s outside shooting to take a 56-55 lead at the half, then gradually drew away to a Sbpoint lead in the fourth quarter. After a time out, Memphis guard Rick Mount missed a short jump shot but Daniels tapped the errant shot through for the victory. George Carter led Memphis with 19 points while Daniels had II points and 15 rebounds. Mack Calvin scored 21 points as the Nuggets hit on 50.5 per cent of their field goal attempts. Denver led 60-38 at tile half after what Coach Larry Brown called “the best half the Nuggets have put together this season."

Racers Coach Jerry Moore after his team downed the Hapless Michigan Stags, 6-1, in World Hockey Association play Sunday. “WeYe getting the first goal, and we Ye finally killing penalties off," Moore added. “WeYe checking much more closely and getting goal tending.” It was the Racers third consecutive win after starting off the first ten contests by losing nine. The defeat was the fifth in a row and ninth in 11 games for the Stags. Six different Indiana players contributed goals during the penalty-marred game which was marked with four fights. Bob Whitlock fired his eighth goal of the season and others were scored by Jim Hargreaves. Gary Bredin, Bob Fitchner, Jim Wiste and Joe Robertson. The Staggs got their only goal when Dan Gruen tied the score at 1-1 late in the first period. The Racers then came back with two goals in the second and three in the third period. Meanwhile, the Stags announced the trade of defenseman Bill Horton to Indianapolis for Bredin, a forward. Bredin formerly was in the minor league system of the Detroit Red Wings. Horton has been playing for Greensboro of the Southern League after being dropped by the Stags in the training season.
