Questions of Nixon’s guilt loom over Watergate
As th* Watergate trial proceeds, subtle adjustments are being made on the narrow question of Richard Nison's ample guilt, as charged by the House of Representatives This is very important for the stability of the republic, and we will all know, as we experience the political rhetoric in the dosing days of the political election, whether the American people have, as a whole, accepted the fact of Richard Nixon's guilt A year ago. after the resignation of Spiro Agnew. there was something of an emotional convulsion among his supporters Rut it was. from the beginning, intemaltied There were no demonstrations in the streets, as for Instance in
protest against Truman’s firing of Mac Arthur 20 years ago. The defense was too well organised, and events moved too fast. Agnew resigned, the 40-page documentary attesting to his guilt was Immediately published, his successor was named at a White House celebration at which Agnew’s name was not even mentioned: and when .Agnew was given his promised half-hour on national television to insist on his innocence, nobody much paid him any attention. The symbol of his desolation came the next morning, when it transpired that President Richard Nixon had not even bothered to listen to Mr. Agnew’s broadcast. He was too busy, entertaining.

Letters to the editor Truth about Bayh
To the editor: I am a farmer, registered Democrat, and chairman of Bipartisans Against Bayh 1 speak for that committee. On Oct. 23, the Terre Haute Tribune gave free space across the entire top of the front page for an attack by Birch Bayh on our committee Significantly. Mr Bayh did not deny the truth of a single one of our approximately W ads Instead, he chose to scream foul and dirty trick What a beautiful spot it would have been for him to point out just one substantial inaccuracy in our many statements. He complained of seven posters greeting his advice to the lovelorn expert. Abby, when she came from out-of-state to tell Vigo County people how we should vote Yet it was OK for him on Oct. 22. 1971, at a news conference of the communist front National Peace Action Coalition, to urge them on with the exhortation "Let the November 6 marches be only the beginning " On Nov. 6. 1971, arrests were made for demonstrating m an illegal manner, l In the Tribune story of Oct. 23. Bayh repeatedly made the false claim that this is his home community-and his home Fipartisans .Against Bayh have conclusively proved that his home is in Washington. P.C. His father moved there when Birch was a small child and remained there until his death several years ago Birch has lived there continuously since he sold his home in Edge wood Grove in 19K2 and does not even have a sleeping room in Indiana The Tribune took the trouble to photograph and print a copy of Bayh’s voter registration showing that on March li. 19M, Bayh claimed under oath that he had changed his residence from 130 Jackson Blvd to Rural Route 2. West Terre Haute in Fayette Township The Tribune stated “. he reports that when he is able to get away from Washington, he returns to his residence there ” The fact is. at the Tribune undoubtedly knows from its own investigation, that nobody in the Bayh family has ever lived in the house on the Bayh property It is now and was at the time Bayh claimed it as his residence the home of Mr and Mrs James Poff Bayh recently said he was opposed to the special amnesty program because he felt it might establish two sets of Justice '' He said "I feel the same way
about President Nixon. The way it is. people get the idea there is one set of justice for ex-presidents and one for other people” Clearly Bayh believes the voting laws are for other people-not U.S. Senators. It is ironic that Bipartisans Against Bayh must purchase space in the newspapers to tell the truth, when Bayh is given free space in which to lie. One would think that it would be big news, which the press would be glad to get. when a two time senator's entire family is found to be falsely registered to vote. Bipartisan? Against Bayh have been factual. Bayh says he has never voted for gun licensing. We set out the date and bill on which he did so. Is that indecent or a reflection or the community* We pointed out that when Bayh was a boy his father sent him out of Washington. D C. to an all-white school, and that he sent his own son out of Washington. D.C. to exclusive St. Albans Academy. Yet he says that busing to achieve racial balance is necessary for quality education-for us that is Do we do wrong in pointing this out* Is it a Watergate trick* Bayh finds something sinister in the fact that a few Republicans have given $100.00 to Bipartisan? He finds nothing sinister in the fact that out-of-state tycoons giro him 5 to 10 thousand dollar gifts. It is travelling the low-road for us to even tell the voters about it. It is a sin for us to point out that he has held political office during his entire adult life, and doesn't know what it means to work for a living Maybe he hasn't missed a thing, bu. on the other hand maybe he has. We shouldn't tell people that while he mouths about rolling back petroleum prices, he is really raising the price by voting against the Alaskan Pipe Line, and by requiring imported oil to be carried in the most expensive ships in the worldbecause a maritime union had donated thousands of dollars to his campaign. We are guilty of character assassination if we do this Mr Bayh has taken notice of us by holding a news conference to berate us. Reporters came clear from Indianapolis to hear him scream about how unfairly we are treating him Yet he could point out not one untruth we have printed. One can only conclude that the truth hurts. Joe R. Burton. Chairman Bipartisans against Bayh
1116 mail suggests only these two residual reservations on the Nixon matter. There are those who say that though it's apparently true that Nixon was guilty, it was the special animus against Nixon that caught him up. A Kennedy, ora Johnson, would have got away with it, they say. What is the appropriate answer to that charge? Surely that one can only encourage. not discourage, the cultivation of a special animus a) against doing the kind of thing Mr. Nixon did; and b) against thereupon insisting, in a series of television broadcasts to the nation, that he had not done such things. The- second line is that history will soon ignore the little foolishness of Watergate, and revere the great undertakings of President Nixon. What is the appropriate reply to that observation? Well, it depends of course on one's estimate of the undertakings of Richard Nixon. There is the school of thought that says that history will ignore Nixon's Watergate, because it will be much too much preoccupied with Nixon's inflation, and Nixon’s emasculating detente that led to the hegemony of the Soviet Union over Europe, and of the People's Republic of China over Asia. But thi»-or its optimistic complement-is no answer, really, unless one is willing to say that no President should be impeached for acts of lesser magnitude than those for which he is responsible as statesman. What will Senator Dole be saying, during the last week of his perilous campaign in Kansas? Facing an audience of die-hard loyalists, what will he answer for instance to the question from the floor, “Senator, don't you think that the media showed a great bias against Richard Nixon?” He can answer here: “Yes, the media did show such a bias. Buf-he can continue-“it wasn't this bias that created the conversation divulged in the tapes.’’ It was the tapes that led to his resignation. And now you have John Ehrlichman,
Nixon’s principal domestic adviser, taking the position in court that Nixon ordered him to disobey the law. And you have the special prosecutor telling the world that before the trial is over, it will have been established beyond peradventure that Richard Nixon knew about Watergate within a matter of days after its commission, and began the cover-up operation as of that moment.
A recent poll asked Californians whom would they vote for in a Senate race, Nixon against Tunney. Tunney won by 58 points. The public is through with Nixon. And those who wished to stand by him only to protect him against impulses toward sadism-prosecuting him, and sending him to jail, for instance-feel released by Ford’s pardon. There are no outstanding obligations, they feel. What
he deserves now is privacy.
It is only to torment him to try to keep alive the notion that he might not have been guilty, as charged by the House Judiciary Committee, of crimes of such character as the Founding Fathers, who were not instruments of CBS or the Washington Post, clearly designated a* impeachable offenses.

Greencastle C of C Chamber looks to future
Have You Voted? This was the last week for ballots to be turned in at the Chamber of Commerce office. From the returned ballots a tally will be made to decide who the membership has elected to the board of directors to serve for three years. Please make sure your ballot has been turned in before November 1.
tain this goal of good representation at meetings.
State and Local Meetings: I am trying to arrange more local meetings in our area and keeping better informed on state chamber meetings. I believe it is vitally important to have our Chamber of Commerce represented at such large meetings and regional conferences. The only way the Chamber of Commerce can be a success, is to get involved whenever, and wherever it is possible. I may be calling on our membership in the near future to help me at-
Future Endeavors: The Chamber of Commerce is trying to re-structure itself to better serve its members and the community. I believe our organization has taken some strong steps to help increase services to the following areas; county, community, industry, education, medicine, and the aged and aging. We hope to continue to reevaluate our past assistance to the above named categories.
stop deficit spending, start balancing budgets and return to fiscal responsibility. * The Chamber of Commerce suggests that all citizens should call or write their Congressmen and put questions to candidates running for the Senate or House to find out how they stand and how they vote on key inflation issues. Get involved with your government and let them know what you think.
Hoosler Humor The word budget comes from the French word bougette. It means a small bag, which is what the taxpayer is left holding.
Inflation
Express your opinion
Inflation is essentially a political rather than an economic problem. Its basic cause is years of deficit spending by the Federal Government for which Congress bears a large responsibility. If it is to be cured, political pressure has got to be applied to convince government officialsand especially members of Congress-to
Unemployment Benefits: The House and Senate passed and sent to the White House a bill to extend until April 30,1975, the present authorization of thirteen weeks of additional unemployment benefits for workers who have exhausted their regular 26-week entitlement in States with a jobless rate higher than four percent. The extension could affect as many as one million workers, so watch closely all the bills being signed by President Ford in the near future. Indiana is one of twenty States that will be affected by the signing of the bill by Ford.
Involvement and Action Maybe litter around a national park or a famous American landmark seems a long way from home. But litter is like cancer. It spreads. It is a disease. And as more and more of us share this country, it is creeping closer to home. Your Home! And strangely enough, the people who litter often do it with things they need and appreciate most. Like non-returnable bottles and cans and other packages, that are made for your convenience. Almost none of us is innocent. All most all of us litter.. .at least a little. So all of us have to pitch in to stop it. Which makes stopping litter just that much easier. This is one disease we can lick, if we all cut it out...and pitch in. Please!! Take some pride in your community, wherever it is, and in Putnam County, don’t Litter!!

And on my other left, a genuine New Yorker who has never been mugged. Jack Javits what accounts for your astonishing mugged-free record. Jack? “For the past 37 years I have been in Washington talking to the United States Senate Under Senate rules the mugging of Senators is out of order on the Senate floor.'* You really know those Senate rules. Jack. As you said repeatedly in this game. New York cannot afford a Senator who doesn't know the rules at this astoundingly crucial moment in the tide in the affairs of men which, taken at its flood, can giro the entire nation a pretty good eyewash How do you counter Jack's move to sew up the big knowledge-of-the-Senate-rules vote. Ramsev* “Howdy. Y'all” I didn't tell you to say Howdy " again. Ramsey. I asked how you planned oounter"Ah'm counterin' it by saying' Howdy.' Ain't many things a man can say in this world more honest than Howdy.' and Ah - m savin it right now. Howdy, east side. Howdy, west side. Howdy, all around the town.'* What a move. Ramsey! Honesty! The most novel idea to hit New York since Stuyvesant swindled the Indians. What is your next move. Jack* Do you think
honestly is too radical a concept for New York*
"I want every voter to know that I not onlv endorse honesty-" Wow! this is dynamite, Folks! "—But that I also wear socks. And not only socks. I also wear shoes,” This is something. Folks. Really, something! Jack has taken the gloves off and show us he has socks. He's playing rough. Ramsey. “Howdy. Syracuse. Howdy. Utica.’'
Ramsey, Ramsey! Jack has moved decisively to seize the big covered-feet vote. How do you, as the barefoot boy from Texas, plan to block Jack's daring move, particularly in view of the fact that under Senate rules it is out of order for a member to address the Senate in bare feet?
"Ah*m proud of my bare feet. Those bare feet are a badge of honesty. They' prove to Buffalo and Gloversville and Pelham and Staten Island that no fat cats like Rockfeller can buy Ramsey with shoe-and-sock money.”
Ingenious. Ramsey. Jack will have to do some heavy undressing to overcome that tremendous gain you've just scored with the anit-fat-cat bloc.
