Myths about menopause

BvT.R.Van Pellen. M.D. <cU»74byThfCWca|fo Tribune World Rights Reserved The menopause, although uncomfortable for some women, is not serious To prove the point, a recent survey showed that most women considered it a blessing which gave them freedom. Freedom from menstruation, fear of pregnancy and enhanced marital and sexual relationships. But as many older women know, this was not always the case At the turn of the century, the change of life was regarded as a dangerous and painful transition from youth to old age It meant to many women four or five years of suffering while they withered like grapes into raisins Myths about the menopause were common because at this time of life women tend to develop a variety of ailments Oddly, the symptoms probably existed long before and continued for some time after the menopause And as the woman approaches her 50th birthday., it is only natural to blame the menopause for the usual nervous and emotional disorders that are bound to develop .Although the reduced ac-

tivity of the uterus and ovaries can induce minor and correctable discomforts, what really throws the woman into panic is the fear of growing old, the threat to emotional stability, and other normal facets of the aging process Yet a new outlook, a more attentive husband, a challenging project andjf necessary, a tranquilizer can obviate menopause-related depression. legitimate and real symptoms of the menopause are due to the dwindling supply of female sex hormones (estrogens 1, This deficiency leads to hot flashes and changes in the reproductive organs. But hormone replacement therapy takes care of this aspect of the problem donidine a migraine remedy, also is helpful in reducing the hot flashes Positive thinkers usually sail through the menopause with minimum irritability, anxiety and insomnia Besides, as I said, the menopause is not a disease and its symptoms are transient So if you are approaching or are in the (menopause, don't get uptight. Plan ahead for visits with your grandchildren, trips with your: husband, and try a new hobby, such as painting Above all. consder this a time for doing exactly as

Most players have set notions on what constitutes an opening bid Sometimes they work well, but sometimes these notions boomerang and prove expensive Consider this deal from the finals of a national team of four championship Certainly the players involved were firstrate. but they came to opposite conclusions on whether or not to open the bidding with the West hand As it turned out. this difference of opinion proved to be highly important At the first table. West wound up at two diamonds, going down one for a loss of 100 points It was dangerous for either North or South to enter the bidding at any stage, and they very reasonably passed throughout. At the second table, however, the bidding went

spades lead and attempting a club finesse Score 600 po nts. The North-South pair at the second table gained 500 points on the deal — largely because West failed to open the bidding. It is true that one swallow doesn't make a summer, and one hand doesn't prove a theory, but so far as this writer is concerned. West had a clearcut opening bid and should have made it. An opening spade bid has considerable preemptive value, and in the present case it also had great lead-directing value. Arrests— Continued from page 1 At 1:45 am., Michael Parrish. 19. Route 3. Inside Education Tobacco and Alcohol By Dr. John Coomer Part I: Tobacco and alcohol Today's young person is confronted with a variety of perplexing problems Many of them are the same problems of growing up that adolescents have had for generations. However, the magnitude of some of these problems is greater today and we find new problems replacing sonic old ones which have vanished This is the first in a series of articles which will deal at least superficially, with some of those problems. The use of tobacco and alcohol is probably more widespread among today's youth than ever before. The rampant use of tobacco is surprising in light of the much publicized proof of the harm that tobacco can cause the body. Teenagers today are the same young people who as fourth graders six years ago were forcing parents and other adults to stop smoking because of the anti-smoking publicity coming out of the surgeon general’s office More alarming even than the use of tobacco is alcohol consumption. The increase here is even more dramatic and the problems, at least the immediate, short range problems, are greater The number of high school age youngsters arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants has risen. It is common to find alcohol at parties even in the best of homes and as often as not in the open We would note several causes for the increase. The old motivation to try to act “grown up" is still behind much of this. More adults indulge in these habits than before and therefore set the pattern Television, movies, and advertisements tend to glorify both habits. The permissiveness that pervades society plays a large role. Parents often provide or at least condone. Often the attitude is "I'd rather have him do it in front of me than behind my bac." Or, "I'd rather she smoke (or drink) a little than get involved in something worse." Ux enforcement of laws prohibiting minor purchase of both tobacco and alcoholic beverages opens the door. It is a simple matter to obtain both. Then, far too lenient penalties for offenders removes any fear erf punishment. Drug abuse, a problem with which we will deal in greater detail in the next installment, plays its part. There was a time when if a youngster smoked, or especially drank, he was committing the ultimate vice. Drugs have surpassed these vices. Now drug use has become the ultimate. Therefore, smoking and drinking do not seem nearly as serious and so are much more widely accepted among young people.
