Scripture Lesson: I Timothy «:tlO President Ford in his message to the Congress challenged all of us to “tighten our belts.” He challenged members of the Congress to “bite the bullet” and support his proposed program of a 5 percent surtax to help fight inflation. Since the day of the Speech we have heard much “noisy chatter” from the Hill. Some of the Congress persons are supporting the program simply on party lines while others oppose it for the same reason. The cry for opposition is that the wrong group of people are going to get “hurt.” Personally I do not fully know

what is being said in such statement. Some of our leaders are saying that such an attempt to curb the national problem of Inflation would Just add fuel to the flame. It does seem strange to me that many do not want to 3>eak too loud for fear of what the voters may do at the voting polls in November. Before I go much further, I want to clarify that I am not speaking a* an authority on economics. Hie fact is I had a hard time understanding what was happening in my economics class when I was a student in college. However, as a Christian and as a pastor, I feel all of us should seriously

retirement, social security, savings, wealth, and cost of living was talked about. It was no earth shaking discussion but an interesting statement was made. One good soul spoke up and said, “I am glad I am not rid) and have to worry about some member of my family being kidnapped or my wealth being stolen. Money is the root of evil. ' Irregardless of the statement, money is not the root of all evil. No doubt the person meant well but the proper wording of Paul’s statement is “the love of money is the root of all evils...”. When one inserts the word “love” in the statement a

consider what are some of the critical issues at the rootage system of national problem of inflation. We may think in terms as the problem being in the hands of our President but the real truth is it is a personal problem It is our problem. I say it is our personal problem because I choose how much I will yield to my desires to have more “things" whether I really need them or not. Not long ago I was visiting som Not long ago I was visiting with some friends and relatives. In the general conversation the topics of

whole new light shines into the shadows. Today, I believe we should read again Our Lord’s plea in seeking a balanced view of material possessions. In Matthew 6:25ff Christ is quoted as saying: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on.” He is not saying that we are to forget these important facets of life. He is saying do not let this became the ultimate goal in life. It seems to me that in many ways this is what has

happened. We have been poasesaed by possessions. It has been too hard to sav no to our desires. The advertising media constantly encouraged us to enjoy the good life. If you are like me you have in your possession articles that you pould have done without. The fact is you would have more time for other creative things if it were not for taking time in keeping some of the “unnecessary things” operative. As most people, I pay bills, I gripe about prices, my wife shops with a “keener eye,” and we live in hope that problem of inflation will be solved. We are constantly being challenged to look at our standard of living. Somehoty we Americans must realize that we cannot continue waste products and natural resources and tell other nations the American way is the life to

have.

What can I do as an individual and still live? I have asked myself this question a' number of times as I watched prices continue to increase. One answer as our President asked to “bite the bullet.” I believe the words engraved in a desk plaque on former President Truman’s desk hits the issue. The words are “The Buck Stops Here”. It is my personal responsibility to see that my personal life with all my desires remains in alignment with a teaching of Jesus Christ. Jesus told some people, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”. Just because I attend church most of the Sundays out of the year and proclaim that I am a Christian does not mean that I cannot become victimized into thinking God will keep me from engaging in greed. Loyd Ogilvie/'LetGod Love You,’’states: “Most of us are overly concerned about our own affairs. Our time fills up with a daily round of demands

and responsibilities.” This brings me to the question, are all of my actions in the field of purchasing and the care of resources being done for the sake of the Kingdom or have I blindly asked Christ to bless my causes? Where is my faith in relationship to my choices as to where I spend not only my time, energy, and abilities but also my money. Thomas Fry, Jr. in his book “They Dared to Dream” *atea: “Man’s chief end is not to seek peace or pleasure but to fulfill die responsibility which God has given him.” Did God permit Jesus Christ to suffer death on the cross for us to be like we are now? Is it not true that the purpose for the death and resurrection of Christ is that we could have a “whole” life? I do not like to admit the fact but what we are dealing with is the age old problem of greed. It would make me feel much better if I could say that I am Just a victim of circumstance. After all, I must survive. Surviving is one issue but indulging is a different animal. Woodrow Wilson is quoted as saying: “Our civilization cannot survive materially unless it be redeemed spiritually”. How timely the thought is. Our Lord states it another way: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” I confess Lord. I have indulged and have helped fan the

flame of inflation. What am I going to do about curbing my actions? Well Lord, I intend to keep asking myself if my desire for economic success and if my desire to have more than what I really need is in line with my drive and desire for spiritual well being. The Christian faith does not slap our hands for enjoying the pleasures of life. It to our faith that helps us to try to understand how to best enjoy the pleasures that have been provided. Dear Folks:

I finally got the original recipe for shell macaroni and cheese from one of my favorite chain of restaurants in the

United States.

Use the cheapest cheese you can buy in the big rectangular box (which they tell you to never use in recipes that call for cheese). Cube the cheese (cut in squares) and add canned evaporated milk (undiluted), and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. (A dash means a couple of blops; in other words, let the bottle go gurgle, gurgle and you

have it-perfecto!)

Then melt this, stirring constantly, over a low simmering burner. Make sure you stir in a figure eight motion and

use a wooden spoon.

The secret is in pouring the cooked, drained macaroni into the same pot in which you melted the cheese—this way you save having to wash an

Dear Heloise: There’s one place in my house that has never been a pretty place. That’s under the kitchen sink where I keep soap, cleanser, waxes, etc. Last night I picked up some adhesive-backed paper on sale and then wondered what to do

with it.

I though of that ugly cabinet and lined the sides and bottom with the flowered adhesivebacked paper. Now it’s a pleasure to get something out to clean with. It’s prettier, cheaper and easier than painting it. Mrs. Georgia Deaton

I found that if you thread a needle with fishing line, then double it and tie a knot, you can sew along the canvas and some of the rubber. It will hold for many more weeks for playing. The Church of Christ One reads in the Bible of the Lord’s church, of the simplicity of its organization, worship and work. Each congregation was independent, with its own elders to oversee the teaching and spiritual welfare of the members (Acts 14:23,20:28,1 Peter 5:2) and deacons to serve (Phil 1:1, 1 Tim 3:12-23). Each congregation acted under the direction of the Head, who is Christ (Matthew 28:18, Ephesians 1:2223). We find no organization greater than the local church, no personnel between Christ and the members of the church; no international, national, or regional headquarters; no synod; no arch-elders or district overseers; etc. The worship assembly consisted simply of the saints coming together and engaging in singing (Eph 5:19, Col 3:16) prayer (Acts 2:42,4:31) a study of God’s will (Acts 2: The worship assembly conasted simply of the saints coming together and engaging in singing (Eph 5:19, Col 3:16) prayer (Acts 2:42,4:31) a study of God’s will (Acts 2:42,20:7) and on the first day of the week the observing of the Lord’s Supper (Acts 20:7) and giving as prospered (1 Cor 18:2). TTiere were no ritualistic liturgies, no vestments, no sacred furniture, etc. The church is the “pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim 3:15). These practices characterized the early church. It sent forth men to preach the truth and supported them. (Roman 10:13-15, 2 Cor 11:8-9, Phil 4:14-16) The church cared for Its own needy. (Acts 4.34-35) Their mission was to teach the world of the Christ, not to entertain it. They did not promote political activity or social reform. They did not field a ball team or a chariot team. They did not build kitchens and gymnasiums, etc. How men have changed the LoriTl simple order. And yet, in this community there is such a church as you read about in your Bible. Yes, a congregation of people who respect the Lord’s authority. Their only creed is the Bible. They worship in simple New Testament form. You have an invitation to come see for yourself. Attend the services, observe the worrfup, hear the teaching, and then, with an open Bible, compare it with the church as it to described therein. Church of Christ >i» ,.
