John Jardine ‘doesn’t care how’

Badgers hope to play ball control against O.S.U.

I HR'AGO (AP) — Coach John Jardine doesn't care how his Wisconsin Badgers do it as long as they keep the ball away from top-ranked Ohio State in their key Big Ten football clash Saturday at Columbus.

“No, I don't think we have to ram it down their throats,'’ Jardine told the Chicago Football Writers in a telephone interview Tuesday. “We’d like to keep the ball away from them and it doesn't make any differ-

WATKINS GLEN, N. Y. (AP) Carlos Reutemann won the tattle and fellow I^tin-Ameri-can Emerson Fittipaldi won tiie uor during Sunday’s 15th running of the Unit'd States Grand Prix. ‘ It is good.” both s id, following Reutemann's wire-to-wire victory and Fittipaldi's Lurth-place finish that gave him his second world driving championship in two years. And both were somewhat subdued in their victory celebrations because of the de ith during the race of 25-year-old Austrian driver Helmuth Koimgg. Koinigg, of Salzburg, Austria, was killed instantly when his Surtees-Ford failed to make a hairpin turn on the race course end crushed through a steel barrier. His w > the third death . ’u si. Reutemann. who earlier had won tlie South African ami Austrian Grand Prix races, ran the 199.28t miles in 1:40:21.0 for a speed of 119.12 miles per hour — a new record for the redesigned Glen circuit. He was paid $50,000 from the $300,000 purse, his biggest paycheck ever. He said he will share it with members of his team. Fittipaldi had enterec. the race deadlocked with Clay Regaztoni, a Ferrari driver from Switzerland, each with 52 championship points Jody Scheekter, 24. or South Africa, trailed with 45 points. But Regazzcni never was a contender and was out of the championship running after having to pit for a tire change 20 laps into the race. Scheekter. who could have b>. erne the youngest world titleholder ever, ran up front dunng the early going but was forced out at the 45th lap when his lyrrell-Ford developed fuel problems. Fittipaldi thus wound up with 55 prn*> for the season, while Regazzoni remained second with 52 points. Schetkter placed third in the final standings, with Rcgazzoni s Ferrari teammate Niki Lauda h iding fourth with 38.

ence if Us on the ground or through the air.” Jardine was confronted with the possibility of Ohio State winning the flip and then controlling the ball for eight or nine minutes. “That’s a big concern,” said Jardine. “But our offense can do the same thing. We’ve been behind a couple of times and have been able to come back.” The game could become a battle between Archie Griffin of Ohio State and Billy Marek of Wisconsin, two of the better tailbacks in the nation. Marek bolted 81 yards last

Saturday for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to set the pace for a 59-20 victory over Missouri. “The run gave us some life,” said Jardine. “We had been standing around in the tunnel for about seven minutes because of television and other things. It set the tone for the game.” Jardine said the Badgers don’t plan to key on Griffin who has gained 100 or more yards in 15 straight games including last Saturday’s 42-7 victory over Washington State where he gained 196 yards and dashed off 75 yards for a touchdown.

“It’s impossible to key on Griffin,” said Jardine. “You also have to worry about their quarterback, their fullbacks and their wingback.” Jardine said his team is not concerned over the fact that Wisconsin has not won a game at Ohio State since Nov. 23, 1918. “The players are aware of it,” said Jardine “because everybody writes about it. But this team has a personality of its own and is not concerned about what happened long before the players were born.” Jardine said there is no chance of his team being flat

this week following its overwhelming victory ovr Missouri. “We weren’t flat against Colorado,” said Jardine in reference to the possibility of an emotional letdown following the Nebraska upset. “We played good. We trailed KM) and came back to take the lead but we made some silly mistakes.” Jardine refused to put any stock in a remark made by Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes that Wisconsin might be even better than the No. 3 team in the Big Ten. “He’s trying to get his team ready,” said Jardine.
