WORRY CLINIC George W. Crane, PhD., M.D.
Zaring. blue. State Fair alternate: Suzanne McGaughey, blue. State Fair entry; Lisa Nees. red.
Arthur’s tears are a sex symbol of nostalgia for a return to the virile libido of his youth. He is really not enamoured of the cute Fraulein but of his former zestful romantic verve. His wife soon restored that via boudoir cheesecake! CASE B-605: Arthur G„ aged 39, is a victim of sexual nostalgia for his youth. “Dr. Crane,’’ his wife began, “Arthur has been moody for the past few months. “He broods and sometimes I will find him crying but it wasn’t till yesterday that he told me why. “Before we were married 15 years ago, he was stationed with our army troops in West Germany. “And he dated a young girl over there for a year. “Now, after 15 years of apparently happy marriage, he tells me he doesn't really love me but his heart is back there with that young German Fraulein "Dr. Crane, why didn't he show such a romantic feeluig for her during the earlier years of our apparently quite happy marriage? “Why has it suddenlyappeared just the last few months? “We have 3 lovely children whom he always adored, yet he now ignores them, too.” MENOPAUSAL PANIC Until this column dispelled the bugaboo about the female menopause, women in hundreds of cities would also brood and cry, just like Arthur does, as they reached their 39th birthday. For they formerly believed the false notion that their womb was a primarysex organ So they often entered into a menopausal panic, thinking that they no longer could be appealing to their mates after the womb had ceased its regular monthly function in the middle 40s. Thus, they dreaded that they were “on the shelf” as regards romance.

Now that we have shown them that the uterus (womb) is no more essential to their love life than is the appendix to their enjoyment of dinner table victuals, you hear little about the menopause. But men also enter what is called the “climacteric,’’ during which they also brood and become victims of innumerable neurotic fears. They may cry and shun their former friends Often they consult physicians, hoping that hormone shots, as of testosterone, will rejuvenate
them.
Then they try pornographic imagination as well as actual lewd pictures. But they rarely admit their real terror is that their wives will suspect such husbands cannot function in the bedroom. In the resulting male panic, such men employ one ruse after another to divert the wife's suspicions that they are impotent. Some thus drink to excess, hoping their inebriation will camouflage their secret problem and yet let them retain their wife’s solicitude. But others lapse into a nostalgic “passion for an old flame,” just as Arthur is
doing.
His romantic urge for the cute German Fraulein has been desperately pulled out of his memory, as a solace to his wounded libido. For now- that he can't function with his wife in their boudoir, he conjures up this earlier romance to flatter his own wounded sex ego, and as a psychological alibi to explain his lack of fervent affection for his wife. This is a common ruse which we psychiatrists encounter in scared, platonic husbands. The solution is for his wife to restore his libido by more seductive aggressiveness and tantalizing boudoir cheesecake! Such men soon snap out of their moody nostalgia for past sweethearts, if their wives make them function as of yore.
