Dr. English is like many eminent surgeons in being an artist at heart. So he felt that the mechanical reading of the names of colleagues who had passed away, needed to be made more beautiful and idealistic. Note the reaction to his inclusion of sentiment! He was formerly president of our Illinois State Medical Society. “At a former A.M.A. meeting,” he began. “I was disturbed at the perfunctory reading of the list of our faithful leaders who had passed away during the preceding year. “As I left the auditorium, I met our national president and told him any secretary could have merely recited the names of our departed colleagues. “So he said I was elected to handle the memorial service the following year. “I got the cooperation of an attractive wife of one of our members. “She dressed in a beautiful white evening gown for her part in our ceremony. “Then I ordered enough big yellow roses to cover the necrology list. “And obtained a large vase on which I had the spotlight focussed while the auditorium was darkened “As I read off the name of each departed member, and added a few words of appreciation, this lady would take a yellow rose and in the full spotlight, place it in the

vase.

“In this manner, we personalized our farew ell to our dead colleagues and made it a beautiful, inspiring ceremony. “Moreover, it didn't take much longer than the perfunctory recital of the names, as was done the year previous.’ “Since many of our medical delegates were so pleased with this salute to our dead, they asked me to repeat the service the following year. “But we varied the plan by having the lady, dressed in w hite, insert an American flag when I read off each

name.

“They were happy, saying this was the first time their college had been signally honored in connection with the death of one of its distinguished graduates. “And several bequests to the colleges resulted from this second memorial service. “In fact, the son of oneof the doctors so honored, told me he didn't realize fully howwell regarded his father had been among his medical colleagues, so this son made a grant of $100,000 to his father's medical Alma Mater. “Dr. Crane, don't you think it was proper to add this extra evidence of sentiment and beauty to our Please Turn To Page 9
