In a self-contained working community, retarded adults may live happily ever after. The idea gets away from institutionalized communities by providing the kind of housing that is enjoyed by normal

people.

Such a plan seems to be ticking away happily on a 400-acre farm, Innisfree Village, in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Crozet and Charlottesville. Va., where the first four of 20 or so pre-engineered houses are nestled, and where 24 retarded over-17s work and live with 17 normal, unsalaried co-workers and their 13 children. It is another way to solve the problem of what happens to retarded adults. About the time normal children are being kicked out of the family nest to make their own way, the retarded child, who has finished schooling and is unable to cope with public transportation, may begin to face a lifetime of sedentary work in a sheltered atmosphere as an adult. At Innisfree, named for the W. B. Yeats poem, the longtime dream of its director, Heinz Kramp, has changed that old idea, and he hopes to establish other communities of the sort, he said in a phone interview. He became interested in retardation through studies and teachings of the retarded in Montgomery County, Va. “We are moving toward the idea of smaller numbers in the future rather than one community that would continue to grow in size, perhaps several communities of less than the 150 planned for this one. of the villagers, she says. She spent four days in the woodworking shop helping to adapt the machinery to the house. There is a liberal use of glass in all the houses. Nine looms are on the second level of one of the houses, which adapt easily to change because of their post and beam construction. Partitions can be put up anywhere because no interior wall bears weight, so there was no difficulty. “The most marvelous thing was that the villagers helped build the houses with the builder. The four-foot sections are easily put together,” she remarked. “Sliding glass doors open on some patios from the living rooms and the decks provide a place for sunning and picnicking. Kitchens were adapted to little changes — cabinets open on either side below the passthrough between kitchen and dining room, and shelves are close together so dishes need not be carried too far without being rested,” she said. “The houses can look different on each site depending on placement, size and the mix of panels, yet the architecture can provide a look of continuity, without giving an institutional look, one of the main objectives. "On the drawing board, too,” she continued “is a community hall with a plan that includes a preschool for country children which is scheduled to absorb the retarded further into normal community life.”
