Steam Harvest Days Slated At Billie Creek Village

Steam Harvest Days at Billie Creek Village are slated for July 19-20and 21. A complete threshing show is planned including the chaff. Steam power, horse power and even man power will activate this harvesting pageant at the Billie Creek Village farmstead area. Steam Harvest Days offer the visitor an opportunity to witness the colorful scene of old-time wheat threshing. The heavy powerful chugging of the traction steam engine laboring to drive the grain separator claims center stage. A huge stack of straw continues to encroach upon the setting as additional bundles of wheat are threshed through the two types of separators. A completely different set of sounds are to be found associated with the two old time methods of baling. The hard pounding and continous plunging of the stationary baler produces a fascinating demonstration and testifies to the capabilities of the early day “modern" mechanical engineer, Teamed with this labor saving machine is an early version of a farm tractor

complete with the steel wheels. In sharp contrast to this tractor powered baler is the horse-powered counterpart. The commands from tne team driver, the slapping of the harness against the horses, the noise of a recoiling plunger all combine to dip even deeper into the nostalgic past. Wheat used during Steam Harvest Days was readied weeks earlier. A binder cut the wheat and ties together the number of bundles necessary for the job. “Field hands” followed the binder, picked up the bundles, placed the bundles into the picturesque wheat shocks for curing and about two weeks later scheduled a return to this same field to load up the bundle wagons. For those who wish to once again hear and see the famiiar sounds and scenes of days gone by connected with steam threshing (including the chaff), plans should be made to visit Billie Creek Village on July 19, 20, and 21. Likewise for all ages that desire to witness a re-enactment of the olden days, the same plans

are appropriate. Other associated facets of this pageant include a stone burr mill being powered by a six horsepower one cylinder engine, a horse powered corn grinder, a wagon for hay

rides, plus a chance to visit the wheat field dotted with all the wheat shocks yet to be loaded on the bundle wagon for a final ride to the separator. Of course Billie Creek Vil-

State Highway To Replace Road Signs

INDIANAPOLIS (API-The Indiana State Highway Department expsiCts to complete its first installations ot "no right turns on red” signs by July 1, effective date of a state law permitting such turns against stoiplights where not prohibited. The department ordered 2,000 of the no-turn signs and ordered 1,000 more after surveys indicated experience probably will show a need for banning more turns against red lights. Getting ready for the change meant sending highway department crews to look at 1,178 crossings under state jurisdiction from all approaches. Each has from four to six approaches. Decisions on making exceptions to the general right-turn-on-red rule were based on impaired vision, heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic and where a left turn arrow complicates the situation for approaching traffic. Roger F. Marsh, highway commissison executive director, reminded motorists today that the turns are “not a right, but a privilege to save the driver time and gas. The driver must be responsible and must yield to oncoming traffic." There probably will be more signs later prohibiting the turns in school areas and where pedestrian traffic is found to be heavier than indicated by the original seven-volume crossing survey. Total crossings and right-turn-on-red prohibitions by state highway districts include: —Greenfield District: 467 crossings, 638 prohibitions (four or more at each dangerous crossing). —Vincennes: 137 crossings, 54 prohibitions. —LaPorte: 456 crossings. 356 prohibitions. —Crawfordsville: 164 crossings, 364 prohibitions. —Fort Wayne: 278 crossings, 161 prohibitions. —Seymour: 169 crossings, 79 prohibitions. In addition, city and counties Mustache Winner To Very Careful BALTIMORE, Md. (AP) - Jay Nestle, a Colorado butcher who must be careful not to let his 24-inch handlebar mustache interfere with his work, is the winner of the second annual International Father’s Mustache Competition. Nestle said he plans to let his mustache grow until 1976, when Colorado celebrates its centennial. He estimates that by that time his mustache will have reached ,36 to 40 inches. So far. he has been able to cope with his extra-long handlebar while working at Chuck’s Quality Meats in Broomfield,

Colo.

“It hits the saw once in a while, but not the blade," Nestle said. “It interferes more with recreation than with work.” Nestle. 36, was invited to take part in the contest Sunday after his photograph appeared in a local newspaper. There were about 40 contestants. Nestle says he spends about 10 to 15 minutes a day on the mustache, and about three hours at least twice a week to shampoo and wax it.
