Spade. Partner responds Two Hearts. What would you bid now with each of the following five hands? 1.4KJ743 VQ6 ♦ AQ5 *AQ8 2.4AJ9652 *Q83 4AK74 *- 3.4AK874 VK52 *K93 *83 4.4AKQ72 VA943 4 72 *K8 5.*AKJ832 VK8752 4 6 *10 1. Three notrump. The jump rebid shows 17 to 19 points, with strength in the unbid suits and, of course, notrump distribution. Partner is thus placed in a position to judge the best final contract, as the rebid identifies the precise nature of the opening bid. 2. Three diamonds. There is a very good chance for a slam, but the best trump suit and the proper level are still uncertain. The intention is to show heart support next and in that way suggest a shortage of clubs. Three diamonds is a strong rebid, since the opener voluntarily climbs into the three level. The hand is certainly strong enough for a jump to either three spades or four hearts, but neither of these bids would pinpoint your values nearly as well as the sequence you intend to follow. 3. Three hearts. Although the hand is a minimum, standing by itself, it rises in value when a heart fit is discovered. The bid to avoid is two spades. Partner has guaranteed five hearts, so you aim for the known 5-3 fit rather than a suit where partner’s holding is unknown. 4. Four hearts. This is a very strong hand in support of hearts, and you show it by leaping to four. It can be safely assumed that partner has 10 or more points for his two heart response, which means that game is virtually certain. If partner has more than minimum values, he will presumably go on towards a slam. But all you can do at this point in time is jump to four to indicate at least a moderate interest in a slam. 5. Four notrump. This is one of those relatively infrequent hands where knowing how many aces partner has tells you how many tricks can be made. Accordingly, you use Blackwood. The intention is to stop at five nearts if partner responds five diamonds (one ace); to bid six hearts if he responds five hearts (two aces); and to go all the way if he responds five spades (three aces).

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for 18 years, and I always thought we had a great marriage. Having once been his secretary, I sometimes fill in at his office when one of his girls is on vacation. Last week while I was working there, a man phoned, and in a very gruff and angry tone, he asked to speak to my husband. Since my husband happened to be standing right beside my desk at the time, I handed him the telephone. Then I heard this booming voice say: "My wife just told me everything, and even though I have a loaded gun, you’re not worth going to prison for and neither is she, but if f ever catch you near her again, don’t say I didn’t warn you!” Then he hung up. Abby, I nearly fell apart. I went home immediately, and my husband followed me. We had a long talk, and he told me who she was. [She and her husband belong to our club, and she certainly doesn’t look the part.] My husband said he’d seen her only a few times, she meant nothing to him, and he’d never see her again. I forgave him, and believe him when he says he’ll never see her again, but I’m bound to run into her at the club, and I’m not sure I can handle it. I want her to know that I know. Should I tell her? SHOOK DEAR SHOOK: No. Keep your cool, and resist the temptation to tell her that you know. [Your husband will tell her. | No need to punish her further. Her husband has probably already taken care of that. DEAR ABBY: We have a dentist in our town who is so money hungry it’s unbelievable. It’s a pity the new generation will never know the kind of dentists we knew when we were growing up. They always had time to listen, and they cared. This dentist sees anywhere from 50 to 60 patients daily. Besides a secretary who answers his telephone, he has three people working for him whom he calls "technicians” although none of them has ever had any formal training for the job. They take X-rays, impressions, and even clean and scale teeth. One pulled a suture out of my mouth on the doctor’s day off! Isn’t there a law to protect the public against unqualified people doing dental w T ork? Where should I write to complain? CONCERNED DEAR CONCERNED: There ARE laws, and they are well-defined. Write to your county or state Dental Association. But before you make any accusations, be sure of your facts. DEAR ABBY: Can you think of a nice, simple way for me to ask my parents if I can have a guy spend the night with me? I’m a 21-year-old liberated woman who lives at home. This guy I’m dating lives about an hour’s drive from my house, but he works only ten minutes from here. On Friday nights he works until 10 p.m., and he has to be at work at 9 a.m on Saturday, so you can see how T much more convenient it would be for him if he slept over. My folks are on the old-fashioned side. Got any ideas? LIBERATED DEAR LIB: If you have an extra room for an overnight guest, ask your folks if the fellow can use it. If you’re considering inviting the guy to share your bed. forget it. Problems? You’ll feel better if you get it off your chest. For a personal reply, write to ABBY: Box No. 69700, L. A., Calif. 90069. Enclose stamped, self-addressed envelope, please. For Abhy’s new booklet. "What Teen-Agers Want to Know,” send SI to Abigail Van Buren. 132 Lasky Dr., Beverly Hills, Cal, 90212.
