A Little Of: This And That

Big Walnut

My good friend, Bill Murray has been named to the Greencastle Zoning Board by Mayor Ray Fisher. Congratulations on your appointment, Bill, and 1 know you will make a good member. At least, you will ask questions and that is important.

Received a letter from an old friend, Bill Blanchard, who will be here for the 50th reunion of the Greencastle High School Class of 1925, all the way from California. Bill writes that he would be glad to play the organ for a showing of silent movies if any organization is interested. He and his wife will be in town from June 13th to the 19th or 20th and he has quite a library of good old silent flickers. It is my suggestion that if any group would be interested in his proposition that they contact Kenny Kersey as he is going to provide the organ for the class get together.

In passing Ralph Taylor’s Studio window I noticed a rather large, unusual but most attractive picture frame. In the frame was a picture of a beautiful little girl. My curiosity was aroused so I found out that the youngster was the six-year-old daughter of Dorwin and Norma Duncan and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Moore. Well, Monday was June 3rd and so far only one couple had applied for a marriage license in the office of County Clerk Johnny Masten. However, there are 27 days to go before the month is over so the tempo should pick up.

The Sargasso Sea, stretchingalmost halfway across the North Atlantic, is covered for miles with huge patches of seaweed. Slow circular currents tend to keep the seaweed-Sargassum-congregated there.

Although the Great Salt Lake is fed by freshwater streams and has no connection with the ocean, it is about six times as salty as the ocean.

“At the present time we are working in the office here on the advanced engineering and design studies. We have awarded a contract to Chicago Aerial Surveys for mapping of the area. They have been doing aerial photography and will also be doinOg certain ground control work. This will include no subsurface work, however. They are scheduled to complete the mapping of the dam site this summer and all of the mapping work should be finished by January or February of 1975,” he said. Part of the appropriations to be considered this week by the House of Representatives will be used to continue the mapping work after July 1. Another portion will be used towards a contract not yet awarded for foundation ex-ploration-drilling. “We had hoped to begin drilling soon as the money was available, but we won’t

begin until all rights of entry have been granted us. We’ve had problems in this area, and we may have to go to court to obtain these,” he explained. The Corps had hoped to award this drilling contract by July 1, but obtaining permission , may push their schedule back. “A third contract we will be awarding this fiscal year will be for an environmental assessment. This data will be used to prepare the environmental impact statement which is required on all projects before proceeding with construction. This work will be done through next fall.” “Meanwhile, we’ll be doing hydrology tests here using the maps to determine how much water can be held. We’ll also be doing some stream gauging downstream from the site later to see how much water can be safely released.”

*1 Letter To The Editor

Writers of letters to the editor must include full name and address, although the letters can be published with initials only at the request of the writer. We reserve the right to edit letters and to print them in one or both editions; the preference of the writer regarding choice of edition, if noted, will be followed if possible. Opinions represented herein do not necessarily repre-' sent those of this newspaper. If feasible, submit typed, dou-ble-spaced letters. Dear Editor: Usually in any disciplinary action a warning precedes the punishment. After this initial warning, some counseling should take place and then if the offense occurs again a written reprimand that more serious action may be taken. This should be written, seen by both parties, and then put in one’s personnel file. Then if the offense occurs again the possible serious action taken. The “due process’ of dismissal would then be complete. My recent dismissal as teacher at North Putnam Jr.-Sr. High School occured with no “due process”. At no time during my employment was I counseled as to any difficulties in teaching that were serious enough to warrant this action. Not until the day I was informed that I was not being recommended for a 197475 contract did I become aware that a problem existed. I was given some informal, verbal reasons then. At the May 2 school board meeting the other dismissed teachers and I asked for reconsideration. At the same meeting I requested my reasons

for dismissal in writing. On May 6th the school board met with 29 high school teachers and about 20 elementary teachers. At this meeting many problems between adminstrration and teachers were aired. My informal reasons for dismissal were also discussed. During this meeting one school board member cited an example of buck passing as to who really was doing the recommending. On May 8 I received a letter, not signed by an administrator or school booard, stating my formal reasons for dismissal. The reasons were not the same ones given me verbally but these were vague and general. This letter was dated May 3, yet postmarked May 7, the day after my meeting with the school board. On May 21, we received letters from the school board stating that they saw, “no reason to include any further discussions of the Teacher resignation and termination on any future agenda of the School Board.” I have had no opportunity to rebut the accusations, evidence or statements made in my “formal, written reasons” for termination. Any person who expresses his opinion in a letter to the editor should not be harassed by a member of the school board, yet 1 have been told that one school board member has already harassed a student who wrote a letter to the editor on behalf of three dismissed teachers. I feel that if the school board wants to fulfill its duty fairly, the members should meet with any of the dismissed teachers that care to, and give them a chance to explain. This would show that not only criminals receive “due process” but teachers also. Sincerely yours. V. Leroy Blocher Route 1 Box 99 Bainbridge
