Women’s Athletics Going Wild In Pennsylvania

Perry Doing Fine Without Greoseboll

ARLINGTON Tex. (APj - Gaylord Perry, unshaven and with specks of gray flecking his t h r e e-day-old beard, sat slumped on the dugout steps looking a decade older than his 35 years. A puanchy stomach eased over his beltline and he appeared for all the world like a tired middle-aged man. An older man stood on crutches behind the dugout and asked Perry for an autograph. “Yes sir," Perry said, bounding to his feet in darkened Arlington Stadium. “I don’t like to turn anyone away, particularly in my age group," Perry said, sm.iing. Perry’s work differs from the ordinary 35-year-old man. With an 8-0 victory Tuesday night over the Texas Rangers, the Cleveland ace’s record jumped to 8-1 for the season—tops in the major leagues. Perry hasn’t lost since opening day. That was April 6 to the New York Yankees. And to hear him talk. Perry is making do just fine without his greaseball that sent oppos-

ing managers on furious temper tantrums. “I’m just not using the greaseball anymore," Perry said. “I hated to see it leave the game ... I enjoyed using Perry claimed he can’t remember the last time he doctored up the ball with a load of petroleum jelly. “I honestly can’t remember the last time 1 threw the pitch," Perry said. But he threw no greaseballs or spitballs.” “I used to watch him closely when I was with the (Chicago) Cubs and he was with San Francisco," said Texas’ Ferguson Jenkins, “and 1 always thought he was throwing a loaded pitch every other time." That was a career ago, if you ask Perry’ and Jenkins had to agree “1 didn’t see him go to it," the Ranger pitcher said after Gaylord blanked Texas.

TORONTO (AP) — Gordie Howe, who won six Hart Trophies as the Most Valuable Player in the National Hockey League, capped his “rookie season in the World Hockey Association by winning the sec-ond-year league’s MVP award at 46 years of age.

Howe finished third in the league’s scoring race with 31 goals and 69 assists after coming out of a two-year retirement to join his sons Mark and Marty on the WHA champion Houston Aeros. He drew 135 points in the media balloting, outdrawing WHA scoring leader

Mike Walton of the Minnesota Fighting Saints, who had 86. Mark Howe, the youngest son and a more conventional rookie at 19, was selected WHA Rookie of the Year. He compiled 79 points on 38 goals and 42 assists in his first professional season

by a set of guidelines being drafted by the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare. It is believed they will call at least for equal opportunities for women athletes in colleges and universities receiving federal funds. Ignoring the guidelines could mean loss of the federal money. Penn State, with 10 years of intercollegiate women’s athletics behind it, doesn't have as far to go as many schools. Its assistant athletic director, Della Durant, is a woman. Its women have an entire building for their program, and they receive an increasingly large share of the athletic budget. The decision to start

awarding scholarships, for example, probably adds 50 per cent to this year’s estimated intercollegiate expenditures of $40,000 for women In contrast, the mens’ teams, not counting football, spent about $280,000 this year. “But that’s deceptive,” said retiring basketball coach Maryann Domitrovitz. “We get all the support, in terms of money, equipment, advice and encouragement, that we need."
