Cub Golfers 2nd In WIC; Clinch All-Sports Trophy

Greencastle was five strokes away from the WIC golf championship Tuesday afternoon at Forest Park in Brazil, but couldn’t come up with a fourth man score to cut the margin Sullivan rode to the title, 313-318. The second place finish is the best for the Cubs in the conference meet since they claimed the title in 1964. Leading the charge for Dick Crawley’s forces was David Conrad, who fired a 75 to take third medalist honors for the meet. Jay Franklin and Rick Bittles both stroked 78’s to keep the Cubs in contention for first, but nobody else could make it in in less than 87. Jim Lett, although he played well, found himself out of bounds three times enroute to that score.

All-ICC Baseball Team Named

Linton finished four strokes back of the Cubs with a 322, followed by Brazil 330, Schulte 33, Clinton 336, West Vigo 383, State High 402, and North Central 459. By placing second, Greencastle passed up West Vigo and Brazil in the standings for the all-sports trophy, and assured themselves of winning the title, even with the final baseball standings still out. Bittles, meanwhile, kept his chances alive to break the alltime Greencastle record for seasonal low average, set in 1969 by Rick Bundy. Bundy, who is presently assistant pro at Robinson Country Club in Robinson, Illinois, averaged 78.5 during that, his senior year, a bit

ahead of the current 79.46 pace maintained by Bittles. The Cubs will entertain State High this afternoon at 1:30 at Windy Hill, but are

looking with more anticipation to a week from today when Sullivan comes to town for a 9:00 a.m. head to head confrontation.

College Ball Powers Collide Today

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. APDefending champion Minnesota and pretournament favorite Southern Illinois collide Thursday in first-round play of the District 4 National Collegate Athletic Association NCAA baseball tournament. The University of Cincinnati and Mid-American champion Miami Ohio meet in the tourney opener. SIU, which was eliminated by

Big Ten king Minnesota last year, carries the “favorite” tag on the basis of its 43-9 season record. Minnesota stopped SIU 2-0 and 7-6 in the District fray last year and marched through the College World Series before being halted by Southern California 8-7. However, Minnesota is without Dave Winfield, its All America pitcher who is now a regular outfielder with the San Diego Padres.

HALLMARKS “Now the children tried to find it and they can’t believe their eyes. Cause the old team isn’t playing and the new team hardly tries. And the sky has got so cloudy when it used to be so clear. And the summer went so quickly this year.” Yes, there used to be a ball park right here.”—Sung by Frank Sinatra Almost every baseball fan has some kind of memory locked up in the hallowed confines of “The House That Ruth Built.” The famous Yankee Stadium, home of so many New York Yankee powerhouse baseball teams, is now in the process of being torn down to make way for 65 million dollars' worth of renovations. I can remember my grandfather telling me of the time he stood outside the then-awesome structure waiting for a chance to see “the Babe swat one out of the park," only to see the bambino strike out twice, and hit a bloop single. Now “youngsters” with names not universally known like Munson, Murcer, Blomberg, Nettles, and Clarke, will attempt to create some memories of their making in the new park. The new Yankees look like they might just have something going for them this season. With a power-hitting lineup and above average pitching, the Yanks have been hovering a few games above .500, leading the Eastern Division of the American League much of the spring. The Yankees, 1973 version, disappointed followers by finishing below .500 after leading the Eastern Division for many months. They’ve got some size 16, triple E width cleats to fill. Babe Ruth and his 60th home run, Don Larsen and his perfect game in the 1956 World Series, Mantle’s grand slammer in the 1953 series. And as the Invirex-Cuyahoga wrecking ball smashes into the upper decks where Joe Dimaggio once tagged a few long balls en route to his 56 game hitting streak--one can’t help but feel that something more than metal and wood is being blasted from the framework of the most famous battlefield in America’s most traditional sport. “There used to be a ball park—
