Chamber Membership Day May 20
Fifteen teams of com-munity-minded businessmen have organized for action and will move out Monday morning, May 20, to present the aims and objectives of the Chamber of Commerce. Activities of the day will begin with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Putnam Inn. Names of persons and organzations who could benefit from Chamber participation will be contacted in what has been termed the first annual Chamber of Commerce membership day. “We have asked Mayor Fisher to proclaim the third Monday in May each year to be Chamber of Commerce Membership Day,” said David Arnold, chairman of the internal affairs committee of the Chamber. Chamber of Commerce directors have realized that it is often difficult to present the Chamber of Commerce story on an individual basis and many who may have a definite interest in the Chamber
program may not have been contacted. Next Monday, some 90 prospects will be seen in the one-day visitation by teams. “The overall purposes of the Chamber of Commerce,” according to James N. Cook, president “are to intensify and channel the forces of the community and to improve and develop business, industry and professional opportunities and to help create an ideal community in which to live, to work and to raise a family.” Cook has listed the following achievements of the Chamber of Commerce in the last two years: I. Instrumental in getting the County Council to join the West Central Association, thus enabling the county to receive more favorable representation in attracting new industry. Also making the town eligible for state and federal support.
2. Establishment of a Senior Citizens Center and obtaining a federal grant for a nutrition program which serves, daily, over 30 of our elder citizens. 3. Through its Government Relations Committee, has successfully campaigned for the passing of the Zoning and Planning Ordinance by the City Council. 4. Pioneered the inquiry for the need of a new hospital soon to be built. 5. Through its Industrial Relations Committee, has agressively pursued new industry and was vital in getting the Greencastle Manufacturing Company to locate here. 6. Efforts of the Uplift Committee has resulted in the remodeling or re-building of over 12 downtown and outlying retail firms. The recent tree planting has also beautified the downtown area. 7. Restructuring of the Retail Merchants Committee re-
sulting in a vigorous campaign to attract more customers to Greencastle. Has also made an extensive Consumer Survey available to its members. As a part of its continuing goals, the Chamber program includes: hiring of a full-time director; attraction of more industry; making local government more efficient; creating more recreation for youth; and improving the traffic and parking situation. As a token of his support and interest in the Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Raymond Fisher has issued the following proclamation: PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the goals and objectives of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce are commensurate with and promote the well-being of the citizens of Greencastle and Putnam County, and; WHEREAS, the con-
tinued successful operation of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and its ability to achieve its goals and objectives are directly dependent upon a constantly growing and active membership from among its citizens of this city and county. NOW THEREFORE, I, Ray Fisher, as Mayor of the City of Greencastle, Indiana, hereby proclaim the third— Monday in May of each year to be Chamber of Commerce Membership Day and in so proclaiming 1 urge all citizens of Greencastle and Putnam County, Indiana, to support the Chamber in its annual drive for membership in any and all ways necessary to further the achievement of its goals and objectives. Proclaimed this 14th day of May, 1974. THE HONORABLE RAY FISHER. MAYOR OFTHECITY OF GREENCASTLE. INDIANA
