A Little Of:

This And That

I received the following letter Tuesday morning which should he of vital interest to everyone.

DearJim:

I am making this request as the newly appointed Civil Defense Director Coordinator of Putnam County. I was appointed to this position by the County Commissioners on 1 Feb. 1974. Since this appointment I have spent most of my time trying to organize and learning about the Civil Defense in this county as compared to other counties and State Regulations to Safety. This is a time consuming job which is something that 1 do not have that

much of.

I was approached by the Banner-Graphic and WXTA the other day asking what was our ‘Warning System’ for Putnam County. As you know I had to say that it wasn’t too good but I

did state that we have this as one of our immediate projects. This inquiry came from a news release by the State Civil Defense Director. Mr. Mitnick saying that the ‘Warning Systems’ in the State were not adequate. To get this program off the ground here in Putnam County I have invited by this means heads of the different industries, officials of the city, county and citiens that I feel are community minded enough to come to this meeting concerning the needs of the county and what equipment that we do have to make a adequate ‘Warning System.’ There will be from the state a Mr. Cleary who has all the answers concerning this subject and we have a film on the tornado of Lubbock Texas which shows just how Emergency Preparedness should work in the event of such a disaster that as oflate hit Indiana. The meeting will be at 7:00 23 May 1974 in the basement of the Savings and Loan Bldg. Northwest side basement entrance. Please try to attend or if you cannot please send a representative. This project is for your protection as well as your people and the citizens of Putnam County. Wm. M. (Spud) Hurst Put. Co. Dir. Coor. Emergency Preparedess Civil Defense

In case you have been wondering why there are so many people limping around Putnam County, it might just ‘be a case of “walkitis”. For many, the visual signs of the March of Dimes Walkathon, held Saturday, Mav4, are just beginning to wear off. Over 461 people, ranging in age from (12) to adult, participated in the first walkathon for March of Dimes. At the start of the walk, $6,665.83 had been pledged. As of yet, it is not known how much money will actually be collected. Out of the 461 who started, 361 walked the whole sixteen miles. Five participants were brought back from the first checkpoint, but the remainder of the 100 dropouts made it to the fifth and sixth check points. Since the finish. Robe Ann Park, was the seventh checkpoint, most participants made it a majority of the way. Jaimi Cox, Putnam County Poster Child, wanted to participate in the walk too. and so walked part of the way with her mother. The first group to finish was composed of South Putnam athletes. Mike Tyler, Jay Albright, Gonzola Briones and Brian Colwell. They finished around noon, which was a record time of three hours. This is half the time it Comer— Continued from page one When an alarm was turned in at the Greencastle station. Firemen Charles Cooper and Ralph Pierce had their hook and ladder unit dashing down West Walnut St. in nothing flat. Their destination, the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Ensign on Liberty St. As the galloping bays turned into Gillespie Street they became unmanageable and as a wheel dropped into a hole in the street, the wagon turned over, throwing Cooper, the driver, and Pierce from the vehicle. The bay team of horses was brought to a stop a short time later and pronounced unhurt. The firemen were not so lucky. Cooper had back injuries and Pierce was well covered with scratches and bruises. The mishap put the hook and ladder unit out of commission with a broken tongue, and much damage to fenders, lamps and running boards. In fact the major loss in the run was to men and equipment. The blaze, caused by explosion of a gasoline stove, was minor and was extinguished before firemen arrived.
