The assistant director of the Vigo County Public Library, Mrs. Betty Martin, has been named as chairman of the Area 7 Planning Commission for the Area Library Services Authority (ALSA). This commission, appointed by the Indiana State Library, consists of representatives of all types of libraries within the region which is made up of Vigo, Sullivan.Clay, Putnam, Parke and Vermillion counties. The group will plan and prepare procedures for establishing an ALSA in Economic Region 7. Purpose of the ALSA organization is to improve and expand library service in the region. The vice-chairman is Miss Marynette White, who is lay representative from Vermillion County. The secretary is Mrs. Jan Alexander from the Cunningham Memorial Library, Indiana
State University and Harry Sherer, assistant superintendent, Clay Community Schools, is treasurer. The directors are Jean Watts, Sullivan High School, and Mrs. Bertha Ellis, North Vermillion High School. Also to serve as directors are Mrs. Ellen Sedlack of Putnam County Public Library, Herman Cole of Rose Hulman Institute, and Mrs. Marianne DeKorvin of the Commerical Solvents Corporation Library. The Library Services Authority Act, enacted by the Indiana Legislature in 1967, details the provisions under which such cooperation between libraries can be established, Mrs. Martin says. They will get consultant help from the Indiana State Library’s Consultant for ALSA’s. Mrs. Martin points out that “participation in an ALSA is entirely voluntary and at the discretion of the
local library’s governing board; and membership in no way affects the autonomy of the individual library.” Three Indiana ALSA groups have already been established. They are Region 1 (Lake, Porter, La Porte, Newton, Jasper, Starke. Pulaski), Region 9 (Wayne, Rush, Fayette, Union, Franklin), and Regions 11-12 (Brown, Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson. Jennings, Ripley, Dearborn, Jefferson, Switzerland). Planning commissions have been established in Regions 2, 5, 8, and 10. ALSA areas are the same as the regions established as Indiana Planning and Development Regions by an Executive Order of the Governor. Each Authority’s area must have a population of at least lOO.OQO. The region 7 Planning Commission for ALSA will he meeting soon to draft a preliminary application for a planninggrant.

Apparently Carl “Pat” Cassady, Indiana’s resident expert on the late Ernie Pyle, who was Cassady’s close friend, also keeps track of other famous personalities who were at one time associated withtheSouth Putnam County town of Cloverdale. w here Cassady lives. Cassady reports that, in the early 30’s, a family moved in the old converted Cradick school house then standing at the first intersection north of what is now Interstate 70. The school was made in to a home tohousethe family of the telephone cross country lineman who served the area. I ater, the family of five moved to Cloverdale where the three children went to school. The children who moved with the parents into the school house were two older daughters. Madonna and Dana, and the youngest of the three at that time just a small boy. His name was, and is. Strother Martin. Jr., and today. Strother Martin is one of the most sought after character actors in America. In 1967, after over 20 years in show business, Martin uttered nine words, “What we have here is a failure to communicate,” in the film “Cool Hand Luke,” and became an “overnight success.” The words were said in his role as “The Captain." the man w ho was in charge of the prison farm where the convict Luke, about whom the movie cen-

tered, was incarcerated. “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” at the time it was uttered, expressed the dilemma of an entire generation. Here was the perennial authority figure (Martin as the Captain) saying the line as he glared dow n at the unfortunate (Paul Newman as Luke)after he had just been beaten. It was a time of unrest on the nation’s campuses, and to many young people who viewed the film it showed again the underdog type getting knocked down by the establishment. The Captain's movie still poster's became fraternity dart boards and little girls, recognizing Martin on the street would tel! him how much they had hated him in the role. This probably didn't bother him much, because Strother has always played “bad guys.” After”Luke”, Martin landed some other juicy roles in such films as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “True Grit”, and “The Wild Bunch.” He is not. however, exclusively a movie actor. He has played several top guest parts on one of television’s longest running shows in history. “Gunsmoke,”and recently on the “Golden Globe” Awards he was nominated as best supporting actor for his role opposite James Stewart in the "Hawkins” series. According to Cassady, he also toured last season with a stage play which starred Henry Fonda. In fact, Martin related that most of his experience was in television. His family came to Putnam County from Kokomo, where he was born. When the depression hit and his father lost the lineman’s job his family moved to Indianapolis where he went to high school. Because, as he said, “there was nothing else to do,” he became a competitive
swimmer through spending many hours at the local YMCA pool, and eventually moved on to diving. He got an athletic scholarship as the result of his aquatic abilities, and attended the University of Michigan, eventually majoring in theatre. The war interrupted his studies, but he went back to get hisdiploma then figured his swimming and theater backgrounds might mix to get him some good movie parts, so he headed for Hollywood. The first ten years of his career, he had to do other things on the side (like teach swimming lessons) but gradually began to get movie and TV parts. In 1954 he began to get steady work, mostly in television, and several movie westerns. It wasn't until 1967, however, that a lot of people across America discovered what those in the entertainment field already knew, that the little boy who moved into that abandoned school Livestock Report Hog prices at the Greencastle Livestock Center today are steady with: J80-190-S31.25-S31.50 190-230-S31.50-S31.75 230-250-S30-S31.50 250-300-S27.50-S30 Sows-$50 cents higher, all weights S25-S27.50 Boars-S23 Grain Report Grain prices at the Greencastle elevators today are: Corn-S2.45-S2.48 Beans-$5.17 Oats-S1.75 New Corn-$2.08 New Beans-S4.63 New Wheat-$3.58
