Cattle Breeders Warned Lack Of Supplements Could Be Harmful

Cattle feeders who are cutting back protein supplement because of its high cost were warned today that such a practice could drastically reduce their profits. This view was expressed by Dr. W.M. (Mac) Beeson, Lynn distinguished professor of agriculture at Purdue University. He spoke at Indiana- Cattle Feeders Day at Purdue. Steers fed one pound of a 64 per cent protein supplement gained four times as rapidly as those fed a com-

parable ration without supplement, Beeson told the cattle feeders in a progress report on a Purdue study. This clearly indicates that a deficiency of protein in the ration of steers drastically reduces the rate of gain, appetite and feed efficiency and increases cost of gain, the animal nutritionist pointed out. In a companion study increasing the protein levels from nine to 10.3 per cent boosted gain per day a third of a pound for steers, Beeson said.

Purdue agronomist L.F. Bauman, described characteristics of two newer type corn hybrids—waxy maize and opaque-2~and said they have potential as livestock feed. Reporting on two studies with these corns, Purdue animal nutrionist T.W. Perry said: “In general, these studies indicate there is no significant or practical difference in the nutritional value of regular hybrid com, opaque-2 corn or waxy corn for finishing steers.” Conclusions from a fiveyear study comparing performance of bulls with steers reported by Purdue animal scientist Truman G. Martin were: “... bulls produced approximately 30 per cent more edible product per animal than steers, and the product produced by bulls was slightly less marbled and only very slightly inferior in palatability tenderness to that produced by steers.”

The Annual Cost Of Farm Basket Jumps

The annual cost of a market basket of U.S. farm-produced groceries jumped 3.1 per cent or a rate of $ 1 a week per household from January to February, according to government figures announced Thursday. It had gained 1.8 per cent, or $30 from December to January on an annual basis. Administration officials, however, insist consumers have seen the worst of 1974 food price increases. According to Bureau of Labor Statisticians consumer figures, the annual cost of a market basket for a theoretical household of 3.2 persons was $1,732 in February, based upon a 3.1 per cent rise. The January rate was $1,680 annually, meaning the gain inone month was $52. Market basket statistics are kept by the Agriculture Department, based upon Labor Department

statistics expected to be available next week. The computations were made unofficially from consumer price index figures announced Thursday. The latest market basket costs compare with $1,409 in February 1973, meaning that consumer food prices rose 22.9 per cent during the 12 months. Although the $52-per-year jump in the market basket rate for JanuaryFebruary was the sharpest in months, it fell far below a $124 boost from July to August last summer after Nixon’s price curbs were eased. No further details or breakdowns on farm shares, middleman costs or other expenses in family food spending were available. Figures on those for February will be available next week.

Purdue Ag School Offers Type B Degree Program

Purdue University’s School of Agriculture this month became the third university school to offer a Type B Associate Degree program for students who decide they must cut short their college career, according to Dr. A.R. Hilst, associate dean and director of resident instruction. The University’s Board of Trustees approved the program at its March 15 meeting. Other schools having Type B programs are the Schools of Science and Technology. The Indiana Commission on Higher Education last

year approved in principle the Type B associate degree programs subject to approval by a school faculty. The School of Agriculture faculty approved the Type B Associate Degree last December.

According to Dr. Jack Long, assistant dean and assistant director of resident instruction, the Type B program is available for undergraduate students in the School of Agriculture who want to withdraw, either temporarily or permanently, before completing the requirements for the four-year baccalaureate degree. Long said students will be eligible to request the Type B Associate Degree program after completing three semesters of regular courses work. After acceptance in the Type B program, the student theri registers for a career, or capstone, semester consisting of what Long termed “substantial occupational emphasis” The Type B program is available to any current or future student in the School of Agriculture. The goal is to

give the associate degree graduate marketable technical skills in his or her chosen field.

Long, who also serves as coordinator for another subbaccalaureate study program, the Eight Weeks Winter Courses in Agriculture, will have overall administrative responsibility for the program, although individual counseling will be accomplished in each of the school’s nine teaching departments or in one of the four interdisciplinary programs. The Type B associate degree will be available in all of the School of Agriculture’s study options. Earlier this year, the trustees approved a structured associate degree program in food sales and distribution to be administered by the School of Agriculture. It is designed to prepare young men and women for middle management positions in wholesale and retail food distribution industries especially grocery chains and supermarkets. Classes will begin Aug. 29.
