A Little Of: This And That
Girls’ State Delegates Announced
Received the following letter in the mail from a former Greencastle resident: Dear Mr. Zeis, 1 read the enclosed article in the “Today" Newspaper, and thought perhaps you would be interested in it. Since it concerns a well known Greencastle man. 1 have known Mr. Ashworth since I was a small child, many years ago, and my late husband and 1 visited him in Miami once. Even though 1 live here in Melbourne, 1 enjoy getting my Banner-Graphic and keeping up on the news in Putnam County. Love to read your “This and That." Sincerely, Mrs. Richard Drake 1687 Hudson Circle N. Melbourne. Fla. 32935. The newspaper clipping enclosed in the letter is about the well known retired Greencastle mail carrier as follows: MIAMI - The only living Spanish-American War veteran in the Scmth Florida area says he remembers eating Army food at the turn of the century that was prepared more than 30 years before during the Civil War. “We opened up some hardtack and packed bacon which said on

the box it was inspected in 1861,” said 93-year-old Frank A. Ashworth. That was in the Philippines, where he spent two years as an artilleryman as U.S. forces put down an insurrection that followed the Cuba fighting. Ashworth, born in Matoon, 111., was honored by Rep. Claude Pepper, D-Fla., Friday in a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW was founded in 1899 by SpanishAmerican War veterans. Ashworth received a block of new postage stamps honoring the VFW. The war in Cuba was over by the time Ashworth signed up in 1901 at 18. But his service in the insurrection qualified him as a Spanish-American veteran. “1 was just a boy working on the railroad in Lexington, Ky„ but the recruiting sergeant said, ‘You're 21,’ so I joined up to fight,” Ashworth recalled in a quiet voice. “I just made the weight, though. One hundred twenty, right on the button." Asked by Pepper if he had been with Teddy Rossevelfs Rough Riders in Cubs in 1898, Ashworth said, “No sir. I was regular army. Never got there." Ashworth, who gets around with a cane, is proud of the fact that he's still active. “I walk a mile before breakfast every morning," he says, “if you can call that active.” He says he also does odd jobs around the house “and a heck of a lot of letter-writing to old buddies and other friends.” His wife, Lottie, died in 1952. about 10 years after they moved to Miami. In Hospital Jack Dearinger of Route 3, Greencastle, had cardio-vas-cular surgery at Methodist Hospital on March 18. His condition is satisfactory. His room is #404.
