Five Greencastle Girls To State Swimming Meet

It Waves

For All

While many Hoosier eyes are focused on Bloomington Saturday, five Greencastle High School girls will be swimming in state finals competition in Lafayette. Lafayette Jefferson High School will be the site of the state swimming meet, with preliminary heats scheduled to begin at 9:30 Saturday morning, followed by the finals at 2 p.m. Senior Jan Smaltz will head the quintet of Tiger Cub girls competing, as she will swim both the 50 and 100 yard backstroke. Smaltz gained the right to travel to the finals with a second place finish in the 50 and a first in the 100 last Saturday in the regional at Terre Haute North. Winning first place finishes in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle Saturday was Kathy Gammon, who will not be making the trip to Lafayette due to vacation complications. These two led Greencastle to a second place finish among the five teams swimming in the regional. The host Terre Haute North squad copped the championship with 362 points, Greencastle followed with 295, Terre Haute South 222.5. Southmont 196, and South Putnam brought up the tail end with 102 markers.

The remainder of the Greencastle delegation to the state finals will be comprized of the 400 yard free style relay team that qualified at Terre Haute Saturday: Judy Cook, Jill Greve, Robin Hunt, and alternate Lisa Poor who will be swimming in place of Missy See, who cannot make the trip. See was also part of medley relay team that qualified for state competition, in addition to Ellen Rattray, Gammon, and Smaltz, but not enough of this team will be at Lafayette Saturday to be able to enter it. Coach Ann Lawyer’s swimmers compiled an 8-4 dual and tri-way meet record over the regular season, and with only two seniors on the squad, Smaltz and Lynette Graffis, a butterfly and diving specialist, the coach looks forward to an even better season next year. In addition to her returnees, Lawver looks with anticipation to the junior high school girls’ team, which has mauled both of their opponents so far this year. Many of these girls could be pushing for front line positions on the high school squad next year. But for this year’s team, hopes will be resting on the quintet in Lafayette Saturday.

Eight Tigers Return To Track Team

A segment of DePauw’s indoor track team will travel to Lafayette tonight to compete in the annual running of the Purdue Invitational in Lambert Fieldhouse. Four of five of the Tiger Tracksters will make the trip, while their teammates are in the process of preparing to return to campus from spring break. Coach Harvey made the spring break practice and competition optional to his

charges. Butler, Indiana State, Manchester, Marion, and Wabash will join DePauw as Purdue’s guests. The meet will be highlighted by the first appearance of Purdue’s Alex DiMarzio, last year’s Big Ten oudoor ' hurdles champion, since he underwent surgery for cartilege damage to his knee suffered during the football season.

Eight lettermen are back for DePauw University’s varsity track team that opens its outdoor season here March 30 against RoseHulman Institute. Coach Bob Harvey will have at least three DePauw record holders in his 1974 track stable and it may take everyone of them to replace the points rolled up by now graduated Rudy Skorupa and Brad Stoops. Skorupa, 1973 MVP, and Stoops scored 91 out. of 216 points last year and were consistent winners in the long and triple jumps and middle distances respectively. Both also ran the relays. Junior co-captain Dave McGarvey of LaPorte is the top point-getter returning. He owns five indoor hurdle records here already and

In a recent indoor meet the LaPorte hurdler took four blue ribbons—in the 50-yard dash, the high and low hurdles and the 306-yard dash. He also grabbed a third in the long jump.

Senior Tom Rust, Indianpolis, and sophomore Doug Ruud, Libertyville, 111., will give DePauw a solid one-two punch in the mile and half mile. Rust holds the indoor and outdoor mile records for the Tigers with times of 4:20.3 and 4:17.3 respectively. Ruud holds DePauw’s three-mile cross country mark. The Tigers will be extremely thin in several field events-notably the pole vault and high jump-but cocaptain Larry Scott, Hinsdale, 111., and Barry Ehrnschwender, Cincinnati, O., show a great deal of promise in the discuss and javelin respectively. The two lettermen earned 11 points apiece last year when they were juniot and freshman respectively. In the conference meet Ehrnschwender won fourth in the javelin (160-6). and Scott gained third in the discus (130-3). Remaining lettermen who Harvey will count on to lift the Tigers’ stock this year include quartermiler Bill Park, Richmond; dashman Denny Logan, Fort Wayne; and distance runner Bruce Long, Indianapolis, who holds DePauw’s three-mile indoor record.
