DEAR ABBY: We are an elderly couple living in a threeroom apartment on the second floor. Our greatest pleasure is listening to the radio and TV. My wife especially enjoys the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. Our problem is the tenant directly below us. When we have our radio or TV on, she starts knocking on her ceiling with a broom handle as a signal for us to turn down the sound. She knows my wife is hard of hearing because she wears a hearing aid, and we try to keep the sound down because we don’t want trouble with the neighbors. My wife gets irritated when this knocking goes on while she’s trying to listen to the TV. We asked the lady downstairs to please quit harassing us in this manner. Her only answer was: “Don’t talk to me about it. For years I have listened to you walking on my head!” 5 ’ Do you think a complaint to the landlord—or the police -would be in order? N. Y. POST READER DEAR READER: This is a matter for the landlord—not the police. But since listening to the radio and TV is your greatest pleasure, why not consider getting earphone attachments for them? Apparently, the sound is more disturbing than you realize. DEAR ABBY: I am a woman, 36 years old, 5 foot 9, and 260 pounds. I have three beautiful daughters from my first marriage and a 16-month-old son from my present marriage My husband is a very handsome 26-year-old man who says he loves me just the way I am. My problem is that I can’t love myself the way I am. I have always had a weight problem. I love my husband very much and don’t want to lose him—just the weight. Can you tell me something about the operation where they remove part of your stomach to lose weight? I am serious about this and have heard it can be done. SERIOUS DEAR SERIOUS: Ask your doctor and let him make such a recommendation—if he will. But remember, unless one removes the CAUSE, it will do no good to treat the symptoms.

DEAR ABBY: My 33-year-old son is an attractive, successful professional man who always has a girl on the string. He will date her exclusively for months, wining and dining her and giving her a big rush. He even ingratiates himself with her parents. And just when everyone expects him to slip a ring on her finger he decides she is not the girl for him. The girl ends up with a broken heart, and my son the heartbreaker starts the same routine with another girl. I can see it happening again, and I am terribly upset. What is wrong with a man who behaves this way? DISTRESSED DEAR DISTRESSED: That all depends on what goes on between your son and the girl. If he only dates her and makes no promises and she winds up with a broken heart, she has taken too much for granted. But if he leads her on with promises of marriage and then drops her, he’s a heel. Don’t be distressed. He’s better off than the man who marries and has a couple of children and THEN decides the girl is not for him.

Roachdale Sorority Celebrates 25 Years

Theta Lambda Chapter of Delta Theta Tau sorority in Roachdale celebrated their 25 years of activity March 4 at the Lions Hall. Seven of the charter members, Dorothy Myers. Betty Wilson, Betty Sutherlin, Dorothy Crosby, Tress Hutchins, Marge Reed, and Marilyn Wilson, were present. After a home cooked dinner was served to 89 guests, the local chapter presented skits portraying activities of the past 25 years.

The next regular meeting will be April 2 with Jeanne Miller at 6:30 to do the cancer drive. New Arrival A boy, Chasteven Shane, was born March 4 in Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Crosby of Lebanon. The grandparents are Mrs. Mary McClaskey of Vincennes and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Crosby of Lebanon.

Consumer Specialist Gives Buying Tips

West Lafayette, Ind. What’s happened to food prices? Almost anyone can tell you-they’ve gone up. And the uptrend in grocery prices is likely to continue, says Jan Armstrong, Extension consumer marketing specialist at Purdue University. However, Dr. Armstrong says the prices will increase slowly during the first half ol 1974. A modest rising trend seems likely in the first quarter; after that, prices may

stabilize somewhat. But despair not. Dr. Armstrong offers several tips that can help whittle down your food bill: Shop your newspaper’s supermarket ad for all it’s worth to save time and money. Find out what meats, fresh produce, frozen foods, and staples are on special, then work them into your week’s meals. Take advantage of “feature specials.” Before you start out, plan your menus completely

enough to guide you in making up a shopping list. Jot down items by departments to save steps and avoid forgetting anything. And remember to take your list with you! On your shopping list, jot down “alternates” in case one food is better buy than another. A special on canned pears may mean savings over the fresh ones you wanted. * Aged natural cheeses are the most expensive cheeses; the process varieties, particularly in large packages, are

the least expensive per pound. All are rich in protein and good-for-you foods. Buy according to yor shortage space. For instance, family-size bags of frozen foods are economical but do not hold well in most small freezers. Take time to read labels and compare brands, grades, and sizes. House or regional brands often cost less than nationally advertised brands.

Put a little fun in your shopping cart. Most families like surprises, and you’ll enjoy trying something new. However, not all “impulse” buying is good. It’s better to pick up ideas from advertisements, then make a note on your shopping list. Think about how much your family will eat. A small can may be the best choice for a twosome, for it gives mealtime variety and eliminates leftovers.

If you shop only once a week, avoid waste by using a fresh produce and other perishables first. If necessary, rely on canned and frozen foods to carry you through meals the latter part of the week. Consider ready-to-heat foods, for some cost less than those made at home. For example, a serving of canned vegetable soup costs about 6c; fixed at home, a cent more.
