REGIONAL PHOTO HIGHLITES

Regional Feature: Pre-Title Game Observations

The following feature article is a succession of observations during the two hours and forty-five minutes preceding the championship game of the Frankfort regional basketball tournament Saturday. 6 p.m. - There are about fifty people sitting around outside the Frankfort High School gym, on the grass, in cars, passing time until the doors open. On the six outdoor basketball courts, where wire nets hang from the bent rims, about thirty kids are playing ball, pretending that they’re playing in the regional - or remembering when they did. 6:30 - The parking lot is beginning to fill up. Horns are honking more frequently now than they did a half-hour ago. Now and then, countering yells of “We’ve got spirit, yes wc do; we’ve got spirit, how about you?” run for 15

seconds. Gaily decorated cars with kids hanging out of them yelling “We're number one!” begin to drive up and down the lanes of the lot. There are more people sitting, standing, waiting.

their feet and applaud them. 7:30 - The gym is nearly full. Game time is still 45 minutes away.

7:00 - The doors open. People begin to fill the gym. What noise there is at a chatter level. 7:10-The Lebanon cheerleaders begin to practice their routines: a guy does a backflip with the help of four others; a girl does a handstand on a guy’s shoulders. 7:15 - The North Montgomery team, which lost this afternoon, files in a straight line to their seats for the title game. Their fans applaud the players the length of their journey. 7:25 - The South Putnam team, which also lost this afternoon, comes into the gym in bunches. The some 75 Eagle fans in the gym rise to

7:34 - Lebanon's cheerleaders and fans start clapping to the music piped in over the p.a. The tempo of the clapping increases until it breaks into staccato. 7:35 - The Frankfort cheerleaders and fans, directly across the floor from the Lebanon cheering section put in their first bit of action with a “Yeah rah Frankfort, beat Lebanon!” 7:35.2 - From across the gym comes the answer: “Yeah rah Lebanon, beat Frankfort!” 7:36 - Frankfort throws out the challenge: “We’ve got spirit, yes we do; we’ve got spirit, how about you? ” 7:36.2 - Lebanon tosses back a new twist: “Yes, yes. yes yes, uh huh!”, which they repeat a good half-dozen times. Frankfort is silent. 7:38 - Lebanon seems to take the cheering edge with two quick yells, the first when they turn their backs on Frankfort and the second when they tell the Hot Dog fans “you’re so cool”. 7:39 - Frankfort rises to the occasion: “Yeah rah Frankfort, beat Lebanon...again!", reminding the Tiger fans of the teams' other meeting this year. 7:40 - Lebanon responds: “No, no, no no, uh uh!" 7:40.1 - Frankfort disagrees: “Yes, yes, yes yes, uh huh!” Both cheering sections rise to their feet, yelling different words in the same rhythm fora solid minute. 7:41 - The cheering battle is suddenly interrupted when two Lebanon fans parade through the upper tier with hot dogs on the ends of sticks swinging over their heads. The Tiger fans around them cheer mightily. 7:42 - Frankfort again

starts the “We’ve got spirit, how about you?’’ challenge. This time Lebanon answers in kind, and the two cheering sections keep up the contest for some 45 seconds.

7:43 - As the Lebanon fans clap, stomp, and cheer, the guy cheerleaders lie on the floor and spin around in circles. The cheer rises to a roar until the cheerleaders stop spinning. The stands are now completely full. Suddenly the Frankfort stands burst into a roar. On the floor in front of them jog four couples, maybe 30-40 years old. The women are wearing blue “Hot Dog” jerseys with their names printed on the backs. One of the men is waving a big plastic hot dog. They run past the stands and continue upstairs. 7:45 - Four Lebanon girl cheerleaders straddle two guys’ shoulders and waists, stretching out straight to look like propellers, while the guys spin around and the fans cheer. When the spinning stops, one of the girls appears to be ill. 7:48 - Four underclass Frankfort cheerleaders move upstairs to fire up the fans there. 7:50 - The Lebanon cheerleaders take the floor for the first real cheer of the night. 7:51 - They barely finish the cheer when both teams burst onto the floor. They are greeted by a thunderous ovation, cross at half-court, and go into drills under the baskets. The ovation dies into a mumbling as fans watch the drills with interest. 7:52 - The coaches shake hands at the center line in front of the scorer’s bench. Frankfort coach John Milholland plays the good host, smiling broadly and putting his arm around Lebanon coach Jim Rosenstihl, who appears to be more restrained. 7:53 - The Frankfort old-

timers, who put in their first appearance ten minutes ago, run through the stands in the upper tier, where they are again greeted by a roar. They make their way to their seats and stop waving the hot dog. 7:55 -The Frankfort Cheerleaders take the floor for their first cheer of the evening, building a pyramid which crumbles to the hardcourt.

the captains together in the center of the floor for a meeting. 8:05 - The Frankfort cheerleaders (the guys of which are already hoarse) start up “Yeah rah Frankfort, all the way!” 8:05.2 - Lebanon adds “Yeah rah Frankfort, all the way home!” 8:10 - The coaches split up. Lebanon runs off the floor to their locker room. Frankfort looks around to see if they should go also. Then they do.

8:02 - The Lebanon fans break into their first fight

8:11 - The smallest Lebanon guy cheerleader per-

forms the traditional pregame dunk, springing off the back of the biggest cheerleader to stuff the game ball through the hoop, while the Tiger fans build a low roar into a whoosh upon the completion ofthedunk. 8:12 - Three trumpeters march onto the floor and play the national anthem, while most of the fans join their voices w ith the instruments. 8:13 - Lebanon returns to the floor, Frankfort follows shortly. 8:14 - The starting lineups are introduced to roars from both sides of the gym. 8:15 - The referee throws the ball up, and the 1974 Frankfort regional championship game is underway.
