Midgets To Race Saturday
When indoor midget auto racing was last run in the Indiana capital, the driver's names most often mentioned were Harry McQuinn, Duke Nalon. Ronnie Householder. Tony W'illman. Marshall Lewis and Art Hartsfeld. That was the spring of 1937. Midget racing USAC style, will take place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Saturday night. March 9th and will end a 37 year drought. The drivers to mention now are Mel Kenyon, Larrv Rice. Billy Engelliart, Merle Bettenhausen. Sonny
Ates, Jigger Cirois. and Steve Cannon. The indoor racing of the middle and late 30’s also took place in the Coliseum...but. it was the old structure located on the exact spot of today’s Coliseum. If records are correct, the midget sport debuted at the Fairgrounds Coliseum on March 20. 1935 under the direction of George Lyons. It is believed that Tony Willman won that First feature event over the 30-lap distance. Next Saturday’s main event will be 100 laps. Warmups start at 5:30
p.m., time trials at 6:30 p.m. and the first race at 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices are S400 for adults and SI.00 for children 12 and under. A Dick W'allen Race Movie Night will be held at the Farmers Building on Friday, March 8th-times are 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., and the cost is S2.00 per person. A special rate for movie and or race-goers has been arranged at the Quality Inn-North for any fan wishing overnight lodging. The Quality InnNorth is located across the street from the Fairgrounds.
Four Hoosier Teams Advance
By The Associated Press 1 ri-State and Hanover, St. Joseph’s and Vincennes advanced in college basketball tournaments Monday, while Indiana State captured a 73-71 decision over No. 4 Evansville in a season wrapup for the Sycamores. Tri-State and Hanover will meet in the NAIA District 21 championship game Wednesday night. The Engineers earned their berth Monday night by downing Marian 91-85 in Indianapolis. The Panthers, now 26-3, topped Huntington 95-79 at Hanover. St. Joe’s host Pumas beat Coe 91-76 in the first round of
the NCAA College Division Great Lakes regional tourney. The Pumas, led by Jim Thordsen’s 33 points, will meet Wis-consin-Green Bay Thursday in Evansville. St. Joe is 18-9. Vincennes' defending champion Trailblazers stopped Macomb of W'arren, Mich., 70-47 in a first-round game of the National Junior College tourney. Playing in the Region 12 eliminations at Bay City, Mich., Vincennes meets C. S. Mott tonight. Host Indiana State upset the Aces as Steve Phillips hit two free throws with 26 seconds left. Evansville had tied the match on a field goal with 1:18
left. Phillips was the leading scorer with 18 points. Jerry Conrad topped the 18-8 Aces with 16. Dennis Laker fired in 30 points to pace Hanover, currently ranked fifth in the NAIA poll. Steve Platt had 35 to lead Huntington, which closes the season at 10-11. Tri-State, 17-12, was led by Bobby Bryant with 32 points. Marian finishies with an 18-7 mark. Hanover will be host for the title game. The winner advances to the national tourney, starting in Kansas City Monday.
