Pistol Pete Seriously Considering Calling It Quits After Next Year
ATLANTA Ga.(AP>- Pete Maravich confirmed Tuesday that he seriously is considering quitting pro basketball when his five-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks expires after the 1974-75 season. But the 25-year-old superstar added, “I’m not saying that I definitely would quit. I’d be a fool to say that.” “But right now, I have to say I am considering it. I’ve said that before.” The first indications that Maravich. a two-time All-Star guard in his four seasons in the National Basketball Association, came several weeks ago when he was suspended for two games for “disciplinary reasons.” “There is no way 1 am enjoying what I am doing right now. I don’t think anybody enjoys the kind of season we are having. . .I’ve been made a scapegoat at times,” said Maravich. “And I am not going to be made a scapegoat anymore.” Maravich, second in the league in scoring with a 28point average, was referring to the Hawks’ dismal 28-39 season which finds them virtually eliminated from a playoff berth for the first time since moving to Atlanta from St. Louis in 1969. Hawks Coach Cotton Fitzsimmons, however, claims Pete will not retire: “I wouldn’t take that seriously.” And teammate Jim Washington agrees. “The way things have been going, losing and all that,” said the 6-foot-7 forward, “I feel like retiring after every defeat. And I’m sure Pete feels the same way. “But there will be a new
game, a new victory and a new season and a new enthusiasm,” said Washington. Maravich, a 6-5, 195-pounder who gained stardom while playing college basketball at Louisiana State also was miffed at a national network special in which he recently took part. “I was misled by the people doing that,” said Maravich. “I thought it was a program concerning the entire Atlanta Hawks basketball team. But when they got through editing
and cutting it, it looked like it was done to show that 1 can make mistakes on a basketball court.” Maravich said of the program, produced by CBS “I scored 32 points, had 15 rebounds, seven assists, but the program emphasized me throwing the ball away two times.” “I can make a mistake, 1 can have a bad game—any player can—but I’m not the Atlanta Hawks. The Atlanta Hawks are 12 players, two coaches, and a trainer. I’m just one of them.”
Egan: 1974 NBA Draft Weak Without Hardship Cases
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Rockets Coach Johnny Egan said Tuesday the 1974 National Basketball Association draft could be improved if several hardship cases are included. “I think this year’s draft will be fairly weak,” Egan told the Houston Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association. “But if some of the undergraduates come out of the hardship list, it could be interesting.” Egan mentioned Centenary’s Lamar Parrish and North Carolina State’s David Thompson as future NBA players who now are being considered for the hardship entries in the draft. “Personally I’d rather see the hardships stay in school, Egan said. “I don’t think Parrish is ready for the pros. We’d
have to wait a couple of years on him to mature.” Egan’s assessment of the upcoming draft did not include UCLA center Bill Walton. Until a recent winning streak, the Rockets were in good position to earn the right to select Walton as the team in the NBA with the worst record. “Of course, you take a guy like Walton,” Egan said, “sure he could come in and turn us around and you’d be hearing from us next year.” Egan said the Rockets were looking for someone who could come in and play right away He said Houston needs an es tablished veteran to help keef his younger players settled it crucial games.
