And here is America its use was finally stopped by the Food and Drug Administration after 4,000 deformed babies were born to such tranquilizer mothers. Yet 72,000 other defective babies were born that same year right here in America! What caused these additional 72.000? The thalidomide hullabaloo served as a neat propaganda “smoke screen” to divert attention from the fact that thousands of those pregnant wives were also smoking and drinking heavily. In Germany, those pregnant women who were so jittery as to demand chemical tranquilizers from their doctors, were often guzzling liquor and chain smokers. So thalidomide became the convenient “whipping
boy.” Those medical experts at the University of Washington merely described what astute physicians have long noted. Which is the higher incidence of deformities in babies born to alcoholic mothers. And you laymen cun see why such infants can be damaged in the womb by such foreign chemicals in the mother's blood stream. For you have already been alerted to the damage .that German Measles can do to a mother, especially during the first 3 months of her pregnancy. Toxins (whether from alcohol, tobacco or a virus), can produce paralysis even in a grown man like former President F. D. Roosevelt. Yet the delicate embryo in the womb has its arm buds sprouting before the embryo is no bigger than your little finger. If alcohol can produce toxic delirium tremens in a grown man or woman, whose weight may be 150 to 200 pounds, think how susceptible a 1 - ounce embryo can be The offspring of alcoholic mothers not only are often crippled, mentally defective and slowed in their growth even after birth, but the same is frequently true of babies born to smoking mothers! For smoking women are far more prone to miscarriages, smaller infants, and a higher incidence of defects in their offspring' Later this week I’ll explain the psychological reason for Maureen’s heavy use of alcohol. But all you expectant mothers should lean over backwards to give your unborn babies a fair break in life!
