Clovers Fall In Final

Cloverdale lost the championship match in the Cascade tourney Saturday night,67-46, to Avon. Running early and often, and Avon Orioles forced the Clovers to neglect their offense resulting in the Orioles getting their rebounds. Yet the Clovers penetrated and forced some adjustments in the Orioles’s defense, and focused on rebounding, doing so with zeal. Close throughout the first two

periods, the half score stood 29-20 in the Orioles favor. Into the second half, the third period saw the Orioles lenghten their lead 42-34. Using Tony Strange, Doug Hampton, and Bill Dawson, the Orioles worked the ball carefully and quickly, getting their shots. Clover Jim Gerlach.Bill Walton, and Tom Qiminings worked correspondingly well, but were’nt able to charge the boards as the Clovers needed.

During the fourth period the Clovers were’nt getting their shots, and the Orioles pulled away to win 67-42. Jim Gerlach led the Clover attack 14, with Bill Walton adding eight. Toney strange led for the Orioles with 20,Doug Hampton and Bill Dawson got 13 and II. The Clovers are now 6-8 overall. See page 4 for stats

North Putnam Drops Two Over Weekend

North Putnam basketball weekend action saw the Cougars lose a double schedule, first Friday night to Covington, 52-62, then Saturday night to Crawfordsville, 6954. R*4:etball coach Jim Sharp commenting on the weekend said, “We probably played as good a game as we have played this year Friday night against Cov ington. Close throughout the first three periods, the Cougars had too many errors during the fourth period, losing the ballgame 52-62. Terry Tippin and Rex Call led for the Cougars with 13 apiece. Ford got 26 for the Trojans, with Drellinger adding 13. Discussing the Crawfordsville match. Sharo said that

the Cougars were beaten off the boards by the Athenian's height, though the shooting percentages for both teams was fairly even. Playing two really tough teams over the weekend the Cougars worked hard during both games and showed reasonably well, despite the losses. Terry Tippin led again Saturday night for the Cougars with 20, while Eric Sutherlin added 14. Stevens, Arvin, and Hesser led for the Athenians with 16,

15, and 14. Next playing Danville Friday, Feb. 1 and Cascade Feb. 2 the Cougars are optimistic. Coach Sharp indicated that the Cougars will probably be concentrating more on the Cascade match, since it is a conference game. Sharp added, “This is the time for us to estabish ourselves, and we hope to bounce back this weekend. It should be a dandy.” See page 4 for stats

By JACK STEVENSON A P Sports Writer LOS ANGELES (APj - UCLA needed just one week to re-establish its superiority in collegiate basketball, and even Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps readily admitted, “They’re No. 1.” With a recuperated Bill Walton scoring 32 points and grabbing II rebounds before fouling out with 5:39 to go, UCLA whipped the previously unbeaten Fighting Irish 94-75 Saturday night, convincingly atoning for a 71-70 loss at Notre Dame Jan. 19. Notre Dame, now 12-1, had knocked the defending national champions out of the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press poll with its narrow victory, which had snapped a record string of 88 straight triumphs by the fruins. But on their home court, and with Coach John Wooden pulling a surprise and starting freshman Marques Johnson for the first time, UCLA won in overwhelming fashion. At one point, the Bruins led by 28 points, as they increased their winning streak at Pauley Pavilion to 60 games, and their season record to 15-1. Johnson, 17, proved the wisdom of Wooden by scoring 16 points, grabbing four rebounds and keeping Notre Dame players from the boards. On Friday night, he had scored 20 points as a substitute against Santa Clara. “Ev,en though he didn’t get a single rebound in the first half, his very presence in the game left other men free to grab the boards," said Wooden, who hadn’t started a freshman since 1952. “Naturally. I would prefer balanced scoring," Wooden said, “but 1 told my players to always try and hit the open man. We have a tremendous scoring machine in Bill Walton,

Cougar Girls Split Basketball Meeting

North Putnam Girl’s Basketball team won their varsity match against Crawfordsville High School Thursday Jan. 24,36-24, but lost the B-team match against Tuttle Junior High School, Crawfordsville, 28-15. “We just couldn't get the ball moving and didn't get enough shots off." said North Putnam girl’s coach, Lynn Hippensteel. about the Cougars B-team game. Crediting Carla Adams and Sam Clark with hard work throughout the game, coach Hippenlsteel said her team as a whole were unable to keep pace with the fast moving Crawfordsville B-team. Kathy Green led for the Cougars B-team with 10. while Simmons got 10 for

Tuttle’s B-team. “We played very impressive basketball during the varsity match, using cool deliberate play to enable us to pull away to win. We led most of the way in the game, separated by only ten points winning by 12. Itwasagood hustling game on our part; Loretta Miles showed especially well for us," coach Hippensteel added. Jo Ellen Clodfelter got 12, with Becky Brothers and Rhonda Alexander adding 10 and nine. Porting led for Crawfordsville with 10. The Cougars girl’s team is now 3-0 varsity; 0-3 B-team. and until they stop him, we should try to get the ball to him." Walton suffered a back injury in a fall on Jan. 7 and didn’t return to action until the game at Notre Dame when he still was stiff and sore. In the rematch, he performed like the player who had been named College Player of the Year in

both 1972 and 1973. Assistant Coach Gary Cunningham earned some of the credit. Wooden said Cunningham suggested a second-half change that had Dave Meyers fronting Notre Dame star John Shumate because Walton had three fouls and, “I wanted him to stay in deep at all times."

Shumate scored 25 points, leading the Irish, but he failed to match Walton and had only five rebounds. At Notre Dame, the Irish outrebounded UCLA, but at Pauley, die Bruins grabbed 43 rebounds and Notre Dame 29. Shumate said the turning point was when Adrian Dantley, the freshman star, collect-

ed his third foul with 6:13 left in the first half and was taken out. “He’s our best rebounder, and losing him hurt," Shumate said. UCLA jumped to a 9-0 lead and was ahead 43-30 at the half, thanks to Walton and 18 points by Keith Wilkes. “Another reason for starting Johnson," Wooden said, “was that his opponent, Dantley, also was a freshman, and I figured they would match up well together physically and emotionally."
