Business Minded Panel Calls lor More Open Government; Politicians Call For Impeachment Vote

Solzhenitsyn Says He f'llfilled Duty

WASHINGTON (AP> - A business-oriented panel has called for more open government and three leading politicians have asked for a quick decision on whether to impeach President Nixon. These developments opened a week in which the Senate Watergate Committee is expected to decide whether it would hold further public hearings on the Watergate scandal. The committee’s alternative was to write its final report and disband. Chairman Sam J. Ervin Jr., D-N.C. has said the hearings would resume Jan. 29, but the majority of the seven-member committee reportedly is undecided whether to continue.

Expected to join with Ervin in seeking resumption were Sens. Joseph M. Montoya, DN.M. and Herman £. Talmadge, D-Ga. The committee’s other Bemocrat, Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, is waiting for a report on staff investigations before making up his mind, his aides say. Of the committee’s three Republicans, Tennessee’s Howard H. Baker, Jr., the vice chairman, and Lowell P. Weicker Jr., of Connecticut, would like to see the committee's work completed. Sen. Edward J. Gurney of Florida has publicly opposed the hearings for months. Chief counsel Samuel Dash has insisted that significant

new information his staff has uncovered on campaign contributions justifies a new round of hearings Privately, however, some of the senators have said they will have to be convinced at a Wednesday meeting of the need for the panel to reconvene. Calling for a quick decision on the impeachment question were Sens. Jacob Javits, RN.Y. and George McGovern, D-S. D. and Gov. Ronald Reagan of California. Each commented on a different Sunday television interview program. McGovern, on ABCs “Issues and Answers," said the House Judiciary committee has ample grounds to proceed with the impeachment charges against Nixon. He said the committee should move “as expeditiously

Mon Captured After Gun Fight

CHARLOTTE N.C.(AP)A 27-year-old man wanted in a triple slaying in Tennessee has been captured here after being wounded in a gun battle with law officers. A spokesman for the FBI said Alvin Seagroves of Chattanooga, Tenn., was arrested Sunday about an hour after the gunfight when Charlotte residents reported seeing a man bleeding in the street. Tennessee authorities said Seagroves had been sought in connection with the Aug. 4 shooting deaths of his former wife's husband, sister and brother-in-law in a parking lot in Tracy City, Tenn. Authorities said Seagroves’ former wife, Phyliss Gregory, was wounded in the shooting incident. It occurred four days after Seagroves was paroled from the Tennessee State Prison, where he had been serving a term for receiving and concealing a stolen car, they said. The FBI said the gun battle began after Seagroves drove a car into the Southern 500 Truck Stop near here on Interstate 85 about 10:45 a.m. EST. The agency said a Tennessee woman and her 2-year-old son were in the car with him and two carloads of agents were following him. The FBI said that, when one of the agents approached the car, Seagroves pulled a pistol and shots were exchanged. Despite a shotgun wound in the arm, Seagroves sped away from the truck stop, officers said. An FBI agent said he was knocked from the side of the car as it passed him but said he was not injured. Seagroves was taken to Charlotte Memorial Hospital after his arrest several miles from the truck stop. His condition was listed as satisfactory late Sunday. The woman, Connie Meeks Nunnally, 35, and her son were not injured, officen said. Her hometown was not released. An FBI agent said Seagroves would be charged with assaulting a federal officer.

as possible and vote the question up or down, clear the air.” Javits was interviewed on the WCBS-TV program “Newsmakers” in New York City. He said the House must make an early decision on the impeachment issue “for the good of the country.” Reagan was on NBCs “Meet the Press” and said “If the Democratic leadership and the committee which is studying it think they have grounds for impeachment, I wish they’d get on with it and clear it up.” And, on the CBS network’s “Face the Nation," Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott said he had information that could clear Nixon of Watergate wrongdoing. But Scott said that for some reason the White House was unwilling to make the information public. Informed sources also have reported that the White House had transcripts that refuted charges by ousted White House aide John W. Dean III that Nixon knew of the Watergate cov-er-up before March 21, 1973, the date that Nixon said he first learned of it.

MOSCOW (AP)— Alexander Solzhenitsyn, denounced as a traitor by Soviet authorities for his book “Gulag Archipelago,” said today the book has fulfilled his duty to the dead. He said he and his family are “ready for anything.” In written answers to questions submitted to him by Western newsmen, the Nobel prizewinning author refused to speculate on what the Kremlin might do to him for smuggling his history of Soviet labor camps out of Russia for publication abroad. “I am not going to make predictions," he said. “I and my family are ready for anything.

I have fulfilled my duty to the dead. It gives me relief and tranquility. “This truth was doomed to die. It was being downtrodden, was being drowned, burned, ground to ashes. But look, it has survived, it lives, it has been printed — and nobody ever will be able to wipe it out.” Solzhenitsyn disputed charges that the book has harmed detente between the Soviet Union and the West. It is “not he who tells about committed crimes who brings harm to peace and to good relations among people and peoples, but he who committed or is committing them,”

he said. He also replied to historian Roy A. Medvedes another member of the dissident movement, who wrote that reform could only come from inside the Soviet Union and criticized him and physicist Andrei Sakharov for their appeals to foreign opinion. Solzhenitsyn agreed that those disatisfied with aspects of Soviet life should not seek help from other governments. But “we addressed the world public and figures of culture," he said. “Their support is priceless, always effective, always helps. We both now are unharmed and alive only because

of that.” He said the proposal of Roy Medvedev and his brother Zhores to seek help from Western Communist circles would not work. The only direct way to change things, he said, is to “address our readers, our compatriots and especially our youth.” Asked how these could render support, he replied: “Not by physical action^ only by rejection of lies, with personal nonparticipation in lies. Each person should decisively stop cooperating with lies everywhere he sees them himself.”
