Charity wins out in holiday spirit By Abigail Van Buren t if74 dv Chicago Trihune-N. Y. News Synd., Irc. DEAR ABBY: My wife and I solved the problem of what to give the people on our Christmas gift list who have everything, plus a collection of white elephants from previous Christmases. We sent them checks in the amount of whatever we would have spent for a gift, and on each check we wrote, “Please sign this over to your favorite charity. Holiday cheer to you!” There are so many worthwhile charities, why spoil the holidays fretting and shopping for unneeded gifts for people who are doing the same for us? We submit this idea in the hope that it will appeal to grownups who want to double their giving. Abby, since you are probably among those who have everything, please accept the enclosed check for your favorite charity as our gift to you. God bless you and yours. EUGENE F. MEGYESY, TULSA DEAR MR. MEGYESY: What a super idea! Too bad it arrived too late to be used this Christmas, but I shall certainly share your novel and generous gift idea with my readers for next Christmas.
DEAR ABBY: I read in your column that there’s a place in Hollywood that sells false fannies for women. Do you know if they have any for men? All the pants I buy are way too big in the seat and I have to have a lot of alteration. FANNYLESS IN FLORIDA DEAR FANNYLESS : A “false fanny” is simply a padded girdle, and I’m sure it doesn’t care who wears it.
DEAR ABBY: I just read the letter from the mother of the 16-year-old girl who had gone to a doctor requesting birth control pills. The mother was shocked and upset. Obviously the girl expected her visit to be confidential, but the moment she left the doctor’s office he was on the phone, reporting to the girl’s mother. Abby, even minors have some rights. Some states have laws permitting minors to receive birth control pills without parental consent, while others do not. If this doctor was unwilling or unable to comply with the girl’s request, he should have told her so and sent her on her way. To tattle to her mother was a gross violation of professional ethics. If a patient sees a doctor about a drinking problem, an ethical doctor does not notify the patient’s employer. Neither does an ethical doctor contact the wife of an unfaithful husband [other than thru public health officials! to report his case of V. D. I hope that girl will report the physician’s betrayal to her medical society. I would expect the same were I to violate medical ethics. SAN FRANCISCO PHYSICIAN DEAR PHYSICIAN: I received a load of letters from other physicians who share your view. I appreciate your writing. ProMemsT You’ll feel better if you get It off your chert. For a personal reply, write to ABBY: Box No. 6t7U0, L. A.. Calif. MU69. Enclose stamped, self-addressed envelope, please. For Abby’s new booklet, “Wfcat Teen-Agers Want ta Know,” send $1 to Abigail Vaa Bnren, 132 Lasky Dr. Beverly Hills, Cal. 90212.

You can save fuel and keep your home heating costs down by keeping all exterior doors tightly closed. Housing specialists at Purdue University point out that heat can escape through open garage, attic and basement doors. Proper home insulation and weatherstripping will also cut heating costs, they add.

Opening lead - two of clubs. Even the best players occasionally stumble in basic situations. Consider this deal played by Brazil and Norway during the 1970 world championship. At the first table, West led a club against four hearts and the Brazilian declarer won the queen with the ace. South played the ten of hearts at trick two, West contributing the seven and dummy the deuce. In with the king, East returned the nine of spades, South’s queen losing to the king. West returned the jack ot spades, dislodging the ace, and declarer played a second trump. Now West rushed up with the ace, cashed the setting trick with the ten of spades, and in that way laid South low. At the second table, with Norway North-South, the contract and opening lead were
exactly the same. But at this table South played the hand more carefully and was rewarded for his pains. He also won the club lead with the ace and played a trump. But when East took the king and returned the nine of spades, South rejected the finesse. Instead he went up with the ace and played a second round of trumps. West took the ace but was helpless. He couldn’t cash the king of spades because that would make South’s queen a trick, while if he played any other suit, South would draw West’s last trump and discard a spade on dummy’s fourth diamond. Either way, declarer would finish with ten tricks. The declarer at the second table was clearly on firm ground when he spurned the spade finesse. If West had the king, it was surely wrong to finesse, while if East had the king, the finesse was unnecessary — since the queen would still be worth a trick.
