Poinsettios Good Buy
West Lafayette, Ind. Weather this fall has been ideal for the commercial production of holiday poinsettias, reports John A. Wott, Purdue University extension home environment horticulturist. Shoppers this year will find that 75-80 per cent of the poinsettias are the new multiflower type. During the past several years, many new poinsettia cultivars have been introduced. The Heggs and Rockford types are pinched early in the season to force mulit-branch-ing. Each branch then produces a full-size flower. Thus you have one plant with many flowers which cuts the initial cost of the number of plants needed. The long-lasting ability of new poinsettia culitvars almost insures that you can still have the plant in bloom at Easter. However, since the crop may be early this vear, why not buy your plant now and enjoy it in the days before Christmas? Many florists feature Christmas open houses and this is a good time to select your plant or one for a gift. Although a symbol of Christmas in many parts of the world, the poinsettia was cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico before Christianity came to the Western Hemisphere. This brilliant flower was highly prized by King Montezuma.
