New Indianapolis Market Opens Dec. 16
The new Indianapolis Livestock Market will open for business Dec. 16. The modern steel and concrete facility will be the largest volume livestock market in Indiana, and the newest central public market in the nation. Construction of the covered livestock shelter, pens, chutes, docks and scales is completed. Still under construction is a separate office building and a Stocker and feeder auction arena within the covered livestock facility. Until the office building is

completed, market sales firms will operate out of mobile home offices at the new market site. Richard Morgan, president of the market, stated that there will be no interruption of marketing services during the move from the old stockyards to the new quarters. The new Indianapolis Livestock Market is located at 2547 Kentucky Ave., Indianapolis, one and a half miles southwest of the old stockyards. Morgan pointed out that the new location is one mile closer to Interstate Belt 465, and is four miles from the Interstate from either the south or the west. Morgan said the new market was especially designed to provide optimum care of cattle, hogs and sheep being marketed. Livestock will be under shelter at all times, he said, and a “flowthrough” layout of the market’s pens and alleys will minimize the amount of handling necessary to unload, sort, pen, sell, weight and load out livestock. Concrete floors throughout will be dry-scraped daily and washed out frequently to keep animals clean. To prevent costly bruises, Morgan continued, all pens are constructed of tubular steel which eliminates bolts, nails, square corners and other sharp objects that might injure animals. Floorlevel docks eliminate ramps where animals might trip and fall, and scored floors in chutes and alleys provide sure footing. For the convenience of shippers, yard offices are located right at the dock area which means help will be available to handle consignments at all times, day or night, Morgan said. “I don’t think there are any better loading and unloading facilities at any market in the country,” he added. “Likewise,” Morgan continued, “we’re confident we’ve built the most pollu-tion-free, odor-free , livestock market that can be devised.” Storm sewers outside and sanitary sewers inside, he explained, will carry effluent from the market right to the City of Indianapolis sewage treatment system located nearby. “Indianapolis has

one of the best sewage disposal systems of any city in the nation,” he stated. “Sewage receives primary and secondary treatment now, and will receive tertiary treatment by 1975” To reduce the quantity of solid wastes, pelleted feed and shelled corn will be fed to animals, and the use of hay will be minimized. All solid wastes will be hauled daily to outlying farms and used as fertilizer. Because the entire structure is steel and concrete, and because the use of bedding will be minimized, rodent and insect problems will be largely eliminated. The pollution control systems used at the new market have been approved by the Indiana waste Stream Pollution Control Board and endorsed by animal waste experts at Purdue University. Robert Hunt, senior vicepresident of United Stockyards Corporation, said he believes the new Indianapolis market, unlike the many small Indiana buying points, will have no problem surpassing current or future pollution control standards set by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. R.E. Schneidau, professor of Livestock Marketing, Purdue University, aid he was happy to see the completion of the new market. “We definitely need the continuation of a viable central market in Indiana,” he said. “Indianapolis prices are very widely quoted and help form prices for livestock throughout the state. It is the most reliable pricing point in the state, and we need representative volume and quality of livestock and good buyer strength there to maintain a viable price base. “There is hardly another market in the state that is not, to some extent, in the hands of the livestock buyer,” he continued. “I would encourage livestock producers who can market at Indianapolis efficiently to do so.” Dr. Schneidau added that he is delighted that the new market plans to soon open a feeder cattle auction as part of its facility.
