Fighting Irish Power Past

Indiana, 73-67

By KEN RAPPOPORT Associated Press Sports Writer Notre Dame’s immovable object met Indiana’s irresistable force Tuesday night — and something had to give. Indiana did. “They’re physical and we’re physical, but we just staved with it,” said Notre Dame Coach Dick Phelps after his sixth-ranked team whipped No. 3 Indiana 73-67. The college basketball giants slugged it out before Notre Dame made Indiana back down with plain, brute strength. “Our rebounding was the most important factor." said Phelps. “We were able to get the key rebound.” More specifically. John Shumate and Adrian Dantley were able to get the key rebounds — 13 apiece. “We just didn’t take charge.” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said after the game, played before a record crowd of 17.463 at the H o o s i e r s ’ Assembly Hall. “They played very well. Notre Dame deserved to win from the first minute to the last minute. In other games involving the Top Twenty, fourth-ranked Maryland toyed with Georgetown (D.C.f 115-83; Vanderbilt upset lOth-rated Memphis State 75-71; No. 11 Penn was shocked 69-61 by Wake Forest; No. 12 Long Beach State routed Los Angeles Loyola 84-58; 14thranked Arizona smashed San Diego State 109-79 and 15thranked Kansas State routed Iowa 105-67. John Lucas and Tom McMillen each scored 23 points and Len Elmore had 22 in Maryland’s victory over outgunned Georgetown. It was Maryland’s third highest point total in history. Vanderbilt defeated Memphis

State in a battle of unbeatens as Joe Ford came through with five free throws in the final 42 seconds. Tony Byers scored 20 points to help Wake Forest upset Penn. The winners checked Penn’s highly-touted forwards Ron Haigler and John Engles. Long Beach State broke open a close game with 22 straight points in the second half and ran away from Los Angeles Loyola. Clifton Pondexter of Long Beach State led all scorers with 20 points. Coniel Norman poured in 23 points and A1 Fleming had 21, leading Arizona over San Diego State. Led by Danny Beard’s 22 points, Kansas State hit 62 per cent from the field and routed Iowa. Purdue, after two upset losses. bounced back to beat Missouri as John Garrett scored 17 points. Elsewhere, St. John’s (N.Y.f beat Davidson 94-78 as Mel Utley scored a career-high 28 points; Villanova took advantage of 39 turnovers to trim Merrimack 112-65; Rutgers squandered a 13-point lead to Princeton, then bounced back to register a 62-55 decision; Illinois beat Detroit 64-60 on Jeff Dawson’s 24 points; Jeff Newman scored 27 to lead Temple over Navy 52-41; Mike Moodv had 19 points as St. Joseph’s (Pa.> defeated Hofstra 86-65; Rich Pokerski hit a free throw with no time left on the clock to give New Mexico a 72-71 triumph over New Mexico State and Colorado State ripped Air Force 62-46 on 57 per cent field goal shooting.

Clover Gropplers Defeat

Cascade Cadets, 39-28

The Cloverdale grapplers have had a good season so far, winning their opener against North Salem Nov. 20, 50-17. Wrestling South Putnam Nov. 28, the Clovers lost by a slight margin--27-30. Next losing to Owen Valley 37-31, and then coming back with a win against Granville Wells Dec. 6-32-22. Monday Clovers Look Ahead To Recoup Forces “We were just outplayed in every phase” said Cloverdale Coach A1 Tucker, commenting on the Clovers large loss against Avon Saturday night. Two lacks, mental involvement and physical conditioning, according to the Coach, caused the Clovers poor showing recently, and underscores the Clovers limitations. Yet looking ahead, Coach Tucker sees a season which will allow perhaps some room to recoup, as the most difficult part of the season schedule is past. Next playing Eminence, Dec. 14, the Clovers are expecting to be more evenly matched, and can start straightening out problems which have so far prevented them from utilizing abilities. Cloverdale
