North Putnam, winning their season tip-off game against Rockville by a whopping 78-38, go into action Friday, Nov. 30 against Turkey Run. Cougars Coach, Jim Sharp, is predicting a tough game, expecting Turkey Run to be both experienced and fast defensively. Studying obstacles to be overcome against their opposition, Coach Sharp said, “Our biggest question mark is our inexperience, our team is dominated by younger boys, and so our season is tough to figure. Yet we have returning lettermen, Terry Tippin, a standout center, Eric Sutherlin, a strong shooting forward, and we feel that by using guys like Tippin, Sutherlin, also Brett Wagner, Jim Brothers, both backcourt players with know-how, we can rally, turn things around. But we don’t discount our problems, our defense needs more study, because our defense will need to be really tough in order for us to do well against our long-range opposition, especially looking ahead to the WCC.” Coach Sharp figures to be strong again, but an old Cougar problem, lack of outside shooting, due to team height and inexperience, may again be prevalent. Yet the Cougars starting line-up, Eric Sutherlin, Brett Wagner, Jim Brothers, Rex Call, Terry Tippin, is a good basis for success, as

their bench, though youthful, can perhaps play a game of musical chairs, by developing their inconsistencies, rough outside shooting, polishing their ball-handling, and turn those inconsistencies around into consistent winning pluses. These factors. Coach Sharp stressed are important, as the season is early yet, and the Cougars win over the

Indiana Collegiate Conference faculty athletic representatives, including DePauw spokesman Robert Coring, have voted to make women eligible immediately for participation in conference non-contact sports. The action was taken at the conference’s two-day meeting in Indianapolis Nov. 19-20 and followed a unanimous recommendation to this same effect by the league’s seven athletic directors. Non-contact sports are construed to mean cross country, golf, swimming, track, and tennis. Women will be subject to the same eligibility requirements as men. In other action taken at the annual fall meeting football traveling squads were hiked from 40 to 44 and Most Outstanding Player awards were authorized in the conference’s

Rockville “ROX” was no indication of the Cougars caliber, nor does that win demonstrate anything about how well North Putnam will play later in the season against much tougher teams. Coach Sharp added, “We will be playing a lot of basketball this year, and should be in the position of adding that necessary scoring punch as we progress and improve.”

nine sports, beginning Jan. 1. The awards program will result in nine individual student athletes receiving special plaques in the sports of cross country, golf, tennis, football, basketball, wrestling, track baseball and swimming. One of the awards—that given in swimming--was designated the “Charles Erdmann Outstanding ICC Swimmer Award.” It will honor the now-retired head swimming coach at DePauw . Professor Robert Loring, faculty athletic representative from DePauw, was elected president of the conference, succeeding Professor Joseph Nygaard of Butler. Professor Ralph Coleman of Evansville was elected vice-president. Norma Hughes of Valparaiso was re-elected executive secretary-treasurer.
