Buckeyes Picked For Rose Bowl

By JOE M OSH IL Associated Press Sports Writer CHICAGO (AP) — Ohio State’s top-ranked Buckeyes, who let a 10-point lead slip from their grasp Saturday and were tied by Michigan 10-10, Sunday were selected to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl game. The decision was announced by Big Ten Commissioner Bill Reed following a special balloting of conference athletic directors who gave the Buckeyes the nod. Originally, the athletic directors had voted that the winner of the game between Ohio State and fourth-ranked Michigan would make the trip but that in a case of a tie a special vote would be taken. Ohio State, with a 9-0-1 record and a title share with Michigan, goes up against Southern California which has a 9-1-1 mark. The Trojans qualified for the Rose Bowl game with a 23-13 victory over rival UCLA Saturday. Ohio State will be entrusted with busting a four-game Big Ten losing streak in the Rose Bowl and the game will match up last season’s foes in which Southern Cal rolled over the Buckeyes 42-17 to nail down the national championship. The lat Big Ten team to win in the Rose Bowl was Ohio State by a 27-16 score over Southern Cal in the 1969 contest. Since then Ohio State and Michigan each have lost twice in the New Year’s Day classic. Ohio State’s selection came somewhat as a surprise but could very well have hinged on the fact that Michigan lost quarterback Dennis Franklin in the closing minutes of Saturday's game with a broken collarbone. Hungry for a victory, the athletic directors apparently decided to go with the team which they figure has the best chance of winning. Without Franklin, Michigan would be at a disadvantage. Michigan dominated Saturday’s game in a scoreless fist quarter but Ohio State, led by sophomore sensation Archie Griffin, took a 10-0 lead at the half. Michigan then took charge in the second half on the hard rushing of fullback Ed Shuttlesworth and on a field goal by Mike Lantry and a touchdown by Franklin, the Wolverines tied the score with some nine minutes to play.

Pruitt Scampers; Steelers Surrender

FAMILY NITE! EVERY TUES. 5-8 PM

CLEVELAND (AP)—Rookie running back Greg Pruitt scampered around left end for a 19-yard scoring drive with 1:01 remaining as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-16 in American Football Conference play Sundav afternoon. The Browns’ final-minutes drive for a winning touchdown that put them within one-half game of the Central Divisionleading Steelers was set up Steelers quarterback Joe Gilliam fumbled the back on the Cleveland 38-yard line. Browns lineback John Garlington recovered. But Cleveland couldn’t move the ball on two plays. Then on a third and eight situation.

quarterback Mike Phipps dodged four tacklers and hit Pruitt for a 42-yard gain to keep the drive alive at the Steelers 18yard line. Running back Leroy Kelly was thrown for a one-yard loss on the next play. And then Pruitt went in for the vital score. More than 12,000 fans decided to stay home on the cloudy, rain-threatened day to watch the game on television. The contest was sold out four weeks ago, which made mandatory its showing on local television. The Browns sold 80,022 tickets, but only 67,773 spectators came through the turnstiles.

tory Saturday night in an overtime game against Cloverdale Clovers at Cloverdale, defeating the Clovers 7266. Greencastle forward, Johnny Hughes, won the first field goal of the game, setting an early lead for the Tiger Cubs, who consistently outscored the Clovers throughout the contest. Both teams experienced a “cold spell” during the first period, as neither team was able to take a commanding position, but the Cubs managed to keep on top ending the period, 15-12. During the second period, Jim Gerlach, Cloverdale center, scored well and was pivotal in tying the game 2020, 5:53 into the period. But the Cubs quickly came back, 3:10 into the period, using Bob Newsom, Kent Frazier,

their fast breaking defense. Rex Baker, Greencastle center, was helpful in the structure of the Cubs defense, but Baker as well as Newsom ran into foul trouble, both fouling out. Both teams had foul trouble, Greencastle having 29 personal fouls, while the Clovers had 18. And while Gerlach usually won his charity tosses, the Greencastle bench as a whole won theirs. The score at the period was 48-54. In the final period, the Clovers again came back with a tough full-court press, using it well, and displayng the high quality of their team. Quick shooting, especially by Gerlach and Phil Mugg, and fast rebounding by Tom Alexander, helped greatly in the Clovers efforts to cut the scor-

ing difference, which the Clovers did by tying the game 62-62 at the end of the final period. During the overtime, Gerlach won the first free throw putting the Clovers one point ahead, the first time in the game, but the Cubs quickly regained their scoring advantage^ and pulled out in front to stay, with Hughes and Kevin Pierce earning two quick field goals. And from that point onward it was the end of the ballgame, Greencastle winning by 72-66. Bob Newsom led all scorers and the Tiger Cub victory with 29 points coming on 14 fielders and one free toss. Newsom scored eight points in each of the first three quarters. The only other Cub to hit in double figures was sen-

ior guard Jon Siebrase who claimed 16 points. Topping the Clover scoring was Tom Cummings with 17 points while both Bill Walton and Jim Gerlach tallied 15 points each. Greencastle High School Coach, Bob Shelton, asked about his victory emphasized that his bench is strong and that the Cubs can play well definsively, although Coach Shelton stressed that the Clovers are a good ball club, as could be seen by Saturday night’s performance. Greencastle who now stands 1-0 for the year will host Crawfordsville in their next outing Nov. 28 while the Clovers, now 1-1 will tangle with the high scoring South Putnam Eagles at Cloverdale Nov. 30.

With 35 seconds to go until the half, Jim Lett scored a field goal putting the Cubs out in front, 44-38.
