Battered Bengak Gear For 0J.

CINCINNATI Ohio (AP>Battered and beaten in two straight games, the Cincinnati Bengals resumed practice today, gearing up for their meeting with running back O. J. Simpson of the Bills at Buffalo this Sunday. “We’ll have a tough old go next Sunday” said Bengals Coach Paul Brown. “Everyone in Buffalo is trying to help O. J. break that record.” Simpson, who has compiled 1,104 yards running this season, is aiming at the all-time record set by Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns in 1963 with 1,863 yards. But Simpson was held to only 79 yards in the 13-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Cincinnati was downed 38-10 by the Dallas Cowboys Sunday and lost to the Steelers at Pittsburgh the week before, dropping to a 4-4 record. Ailing Bengals include running backs Charles “Boobie” Clark, who has a sprained knee and Essex Johnson, who has head bruises. Also, defensive back Lemar Parrish has a bruised shoulder, receiver Isaac Curtis has a strained back and receivers Chip Myers and Bruce Coslet reported pulled muscles.

“HANDSOME” JIMMY VALIANT seems to be saying what he is going to do to Bruiser Thursday night in Greencastle. Valiant and his brother “Luscious” John will meet Dick The Ikuiser and Cowboy Bob Ellis in the main event of the four-bout card.

Joyce Still Unfamiliar With ABA Play

INDIANAPOLIS (AP> Rookie Kevin Joyce, whose professional career consists of two games, admits the grinding style of play in the American Basketball Association “is new...but I’m picking it up pretty easily.” Joyce, a 6-foot-3 guard from Merrick, N.Y., and the University of South Carolina, will play his third game with the Indiana Pacers tonight, when the defending ABA diampions visit the Memphis Tams. A member of the 1972 Olym-

pic basketball team, Joyce originally was the No. 1 draft pick of the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association and of the ABA San Antonio Spurs. The Pacers obtained him last week after negotiations fell through with the Warriors and the Spurs’ rights to him expired. Joyce’s last encounter with Hoosier-style basketball came last spring when he scored his college career-high 41 points against Indiana University. But his professional debut last Fri-

day against Denver was a resounding success with the 7,269 fans at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds Coliseum. He hit his first field goal attempt, then hit his first threepoint attempt, handed‘out two assists and pulled down two rebounds. He played only 14 minutes and finished with seven points but showed some razzle-dazzle moves and refused to be shaken by veteran Warren Jabali’s obvious attempts to unnerve him.
