IRS Invesfigates Tax DefRiendes
Laura has been the object of some typical medical sales patter. Before you submit to surgery, try the simple “horse sense” remedies. Surgery is usually the last resort. And note how few physicians ever submit
to the scalpel! Why?
CASE Y-558: Laura F., aged
Crane, Ph.D., M.D. medical category.
It is called the “fair, fat and forty” gall bladder bracket. “Dr. Crane,” she began, “I often develop some gas and bloating after I eat rich foods. “So I went to my family physician, who had an X-ray made and it showed I had gall
CHICAGO (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service says civil court action on deficient 1969 income taxes has been under way for seven months against former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner. Kerner, a Democrat, already faces a prison term for bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion. An IRS spokesman said the government is seeking more than $12,000 in taxes on deduc-
tions Kerner made for donating his personal papers to the Illinois Historical Society. Court records indicate the papers were appraised at $73,375 by a Lincoln scholar Kerner, who is on leave of absence as a judge from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was sentenced to three years in prison last February in connection with dealings in Illinois race-track stock while he was governor. The conviction is under appeal.

Agnew Pays Fine
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Vice Resident Spiro T. Agnew today paid the $10,000 fine imposed upon him after he pleaded no contest to a tax evasion charge. The Justice Department said it was notified by U.S. Atty. George Beall of Maryland that he received Agnew’s personal
certified check in the mail today. \ Agnew also was sentenced to three years of unsupervised probation after he entered the no contest plea and resigned from office on Oct. 10 in a deal with federal prosecutors. The prosecutors agreed not to bring further charges against him.
“He suggested I have my gall bladder removed, but I hesitated, for I don’t have too frequent attacks. “But he said I might ultimately develop cancer, if I didn’t have surgery for removal of the gall bladder. “Dr. Crane, if you were in my place, would you have your gall bladder removed?” M.D. SALES PATTER Modem medicine produces many miracles via our new drugs and superb surgery. And we have over 300,000 physicians in practice. But how many of you laymen (or you nurses, too) have ever seen an M.D. undergo surgery for his own gall stones? Indeed, how many times have you ever heard of an M.D. submitting to ANY surgery, unless it was to prevent an
obstruction of the bowel or bladder outlet or remove a known cancer? Which doesn’t mean that those 300,000 medics have no gall stones or hemorrhoids or any other ailments from which their patients suffer. But medics are very chary about submitting to surgery

that isn’t a matter of life or death! And beware of becoming stampeded by that warning that “you MIGHT develop cancer.” You MIGHT get struck by a car, too, as you walk to the grocery store, but you play the odds, don’t you? Well, millions of women (and men, too) have gall stones and carry them to their graves at the ripe old age of 80 or better. My mother thus went to the hospital at the age of 80 with gastric distress. Her icteric (bile) index was a little high, though the whites of her eyes didn’t show any yellowing. And mild jaundice first shows up to you laymen via a lemon tint to the whites of the eyes. The surgeon wanted to take out her gall bladder at once! My father refused to O.K. the surgery, abetted by my secret veto, for I had to go along with my surgical colleague as a matter of professional etiquette. Two gall bladder cases had died after such surgery during my mother’s few days at that
same hospital. So she came home, still retaining her gall stones, and is still alive and well, having celebrated her 95th birthday last February. If you gall bladder cases go slow on eating fats, you can usually avoid or minimize gall bladder attacks. It is certainly worth your trying the dietary regimen before you submit to what is a dangerous type even of modern surgery (cholecystectomy). Remember, surgery is supposed to be the LAST resort, after the simple “horse sense” measures have first been tried! See P. 712, in my college textbook “Psychology Applied,” and you’ll find that Dr. Walter Alvarez cites 58 percent totally unnecessary and unwarranted appendectomies in his series of 385. Dr. J. C. Doyle (University of California) also cites 40 percent unnecessary womb removals out of 6,248 hysterectomies!
