At Age 75
Dr. Wishard, Distinguished Urologists, Dies
INDIANAPOLIS (AP>—One of the nation’s most distinguished urologists. Dr. William Niles Wishard Jr., died late Saturday at a hospital here at the age of 75. Dr. Wishard, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and a
member of a pioneer medical family, had practiced medicine here since 1928. Last May he was awarded one of the highest honors a urologist can receive, the Ramon Guiteras Award, at the annual meeting of the American Urolo-
Trooper, Deputies Injured In Chose
INDIANAPOLIS (AP>—An Indiana state trooper and two Marion County reserve deputies were in Indianapolis hospitals Sunday following a four-car accident that climaxed a 100-mile-an-hour chase on Interstate 465 Saturday night. Trooper David E. Kemple and Reserve Marion County Sheriffs Deputies Russell A. Doan and Thomas Howell were listed in satisfactory condition with various injuries suffered in the crash. Cars driven by Kemple, one of the deputies and Noblesville Police Capt. Ralph K. McMillan collided after the car they were chasing swerved on the highway on the northeastside of Indianapolis. The chase started at Nobles v i 1 1 e , northeast of Indianapolis, when McMillan spotted two youths rummaging through a storage shed at a market. The two jumped into a car and McMillan gave chase. The trooper and the deputies tried to block the entrance to the interstate with their cars, but the fleeing car swerved into ditch alongside the ramp, careened wildly for half a block and then succeeded in returning to the ramp and racing onto the interstate. Kemple raced at speeds up to 100 miles per hour to pull beside the fugitives. McMillan was behind the youths’ car and the deputies trailed Kemple. The boys swerved, touching off a chain reaction that sent McMillan’s car into the side of the state police vehicle and the deputies into the rear. The fugitive car spun to a stop just ahead of the accident. The smashed vehicles blocked traffic, starting a traffic jam that eventually saw cars lined up for several miles. Meanwhile, the two youths, apparently uninjured, jumped from their car and disappeared across a field. One youth, identified as Michael T. Carter, 17, of Noblesville, was arrested several
hours later. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, theft, burglary and fleeing a police officer. Body Of Gordon Duerr Returns To U.S. INDIANAPOLIS (AP>—The U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janiero said this weekend that the body of Logansport industrialist Gordon Duerr would be returned to the United States on Wednesday. Duerr, 58, was one of 12 Hoosier business and civic leaders involved in the crash of a Brazilian airliner in Guanabara Bay at Rio last Tuesday. The other 11 members of the trade delegation to South America . were among 57 passengers who swam to safety, but Duerr was missing until his body was pulled from the bay Saturday. Lt. Gov. Robert D. Orr, a member of the trade mission who remained in Brazil to coordinate the search for Duerr, was to participate Monday in a memorial mass held by Vasp airlines in Rio for the eight victims of the crash. He then will return to Indiana, according to John Lucy, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Commerce. Several other members of the trade delegation returned to Indiana last week. Lucy said Duerr’s body was identified through dental records. He said the consulate told him the body would be flown to Indiana via New York. Duerr, owner of the Logansport Machine Company, is survived by the widow, Mrs. Patience Duerr, a daughter, Mrs. R. H . VanVerst of Chicago, and a son, Gordon J. Duerr of Logansport.

Opening lead - ace of diamonds. It is next to impossible to find an explanation for the strange goings-on that not infrequently occur in world championship events. For example, feast your eyes on this hand from the world pair championship in 1970. When Zanasi and Saulino of Italy — who led the field most of the way and finally finished third — were North-South, the bidding went as shown. West made a takeout double of one spade and East chose to leave the double in, hoping to score a juicy penalty against one spade doubled. Why Saulino failed to pass at this point and opted to bid two spades is an unsolved mystery — but the fact is that he did bid two spades. East was of course more confident that he could beat two spades rather than one, and accordingly he
doubled. West led the ace and another diamond. Saulino ruffed in dummy, cashed the A-Q of clubs, ruffed another diamond, cashed the king of clubs, ruffed a club, and exited with a heart. By now, declarer had scored six tricks and could not be stopped from scoring two more in trumps, so he would up making two spades doubled for 670 points. Due to the quirks of matchpoint scoring, Saulino gained very little by his fancy footwork. Had he passed one spade. doubled and made the contract with an overtrick, he would have earned 152 match points out of the maximum 156 that were possible. But by stumbling into two spades doubled — and scoring a game instead of simply a part score — Saulino scored only 155 match points. This was hardly worth all the stress and strain, but it did furnish the tournament with a good story.
