By VIVIAN BROWN AP Newsfeatures Writer There are times when it doesn’t pay to do it yourself, advises plumber Dominick Posca of Redding, Conn. In fact, if people would take that advice Dom could enjoy Sundays with his family. As it is, Sunday is the day when he gets most of his unusual jobs, he says, because weekends are the busiest times for do-it-yourselfers. In Dorn’s words, “they start off Saturday morning buying a lot of tools to do a job, and then, watch out....” “One man screwed the pressure switch on his pump way down and blew the top of the tank right off,” Dom says. “The pressure is supposed to remain at 55 or 60 — tanks only go for 75 pounds per square inch. But he had it up to about 100 pounds ...” If he had let a plumber do it in the first place the job would have taken only about 10 minutes, Dom remarked. The main bathroom fixture is a favorite target of do-it-your-selfers. It might be a simple job like installing a new seat, he remarked. One man bought about $50 worth of tools and in the end he cracked the porcelain fixture and had to have a complete new installation. Another man decided to do what should be one of the simplest jobs — installing a new ball fitting inside the water closet. He broke the section of the pipe that goes into the wall and thereby ran up an $80 bill. If he had called a plumber in the first place the iob might have been only about $30, observed Dom. And then there is the man who bought a kitchen faucet at a do-it-yourself supply house with the idea of installing it himself. He estimated later the entire deal with tools cost him about $70. But, then, he couldn’t remove the old faucet to install a new one (the faucet had been stepped on and broken when the do-it-yourselfer had been doing some kitchen cabinet work.) It took the plumber about a half hour to get the faucet off, Dom said, and he had to charge him $40, which would have been what he might have paid for the job in the first place. But the installation of the faucet actually cost the would-be-do-it-yoursel-fer about $125, not counting the gas to the supply house which is about a half hour from the man’s town. Dom doesn’t complain that his Sundays are taken up by the do-it-yourselfers or that on hot Saturdays he may be hooking up a new washing machine for a woman with a big family. Continued On Page 5
