(laming wreckage and escaped with only minor injuries. The victims were identified as Frank Bihlman, 39, Valparaiso, and Carl E. Emshoff, 35, Clancy, 111. Richard Wozniakowski, 22, Calumet City, 111., was a passenger in Emshoffs plane. Airport officials said Emshoff was returning from Grand Rapids, Mich., and was attempting to land when his aircraft and Hhlman’s collided as Bihlman was taking off. Authorities said the planes crashed onto airport property a considerable distance from the tower. Wozmakowski suffered burns on his right arm and cuts but was released after treatment at Gary Methodist Hospital.

By KEN DAVIS Associated Press Writer KINGS ISLAND Ohio (AP) — Mrs. Frances Whitfield, grandmother in residence to television’s The Brady Bunch, hoisted herself unaided to a perch on the counter of a midway stand normally devoted to breaking plates with baseballs. A few feet to her right. Paramount busily filmed a scene from the seventh episode of the fall series with this giant midwestern amusement park as a backdrop. “They really are like a family in many ways,” Mrs. Whitfield said. She watched Barry Williams do a scene as Greg, eldest son of The Brady Bunch. “1 guess you could call me grandmother in residence.” The white-haired Californian.

also a grandmother in private life, has been tutor for the television series for the last five years . She represents California’s education and labor departments in watching over the welfare of the six youngsters. When she began the series, Barry, who will be 20 this month, was just 14. Michael Lookinland, the series’ Bobby, was going on 8. “You know Flocence has four children,” said Mrs. Whitfield. Florence Henderson plays Carol Brady, mother of The Brady Bunch. “The kids visit back and forth, and now and again Florence’s children join the class. Bob Reed bought each one of the children a movie camera one Christmas, and a projector the next year. “He had them out to his

house and had them compete in a home movie contest. That’s sort of grown into a tradition.” Reed, the Brady father, has a teen-aged daughter living in Connecticut. Perhaps as a backfire against sibling rivalry between real and reel children, Reed flew his daughter out last year to do a speaking spot on the show. “Boy, you did better than I did,” said one of the Henderson children. “All I got to be was a tree.” Mrs. Whitfield testified that sibling rivalry had not broken out. “The kids are professionals,” she said. “They come from good homes where they are secure.” Mrs. Whitfield has been a movie and television tutor for a dozen years, but show business

children were no mystery before that. Her own daughter, now married and living in Sherman Oaks, Calif., was Anne Whitfield, one of the cast of radio and television’s long-run-ning One Man’s Family, and a veteran of other broadcast dramas. The Brady grandmother-be-hind-the-scenes speaks softly with impeccable diction based on a degree in speech from the University of Alabama, but her southern charm hides some steel, too. She got her daughter into “One Man’s Family” during World War II by writing producer Carleton Morse asking for an appointment. ‘The family thought I was mad ,” she smiled, “but I got it in a couple of weeks.” With this kind of determina-

tion, Mrs. Whitfield finds her job as tutor of The Brady Bunch pleasantly uncomplicated. “These kids are smart,” she said. “They’re the kind who would do well in any school. There’s no problem getting them to study.” She obviously was proud when she said, “We’ve managed to keep them up with their classes.” The first semester of the school year, Mrs. Whitfield and a second instructor teach the Brady brood three hours daily. Barry no longer is a Whitfield student. He goes to Pepperdine College. The second semester the other five fradys go to public schools in California. “Last year they had a singing tour and they went to a prof e s s i o n a 1 school,” Mrs. Whitfield said. “But. 1 think No Respoase To iHHoeRdo Charges: Nixoa WASHINGTON (AP) — President Nixon said that he would “not dignify” with an answer any hypothetical questions about Vice President Spiro T. Agnew based on “charges made by innuendo.” Speaking to his second news conference in two weeks, Nixon recalled that he has already expressed his confidence in Agnew, who is under federal investigation in connection with alleged political kickbacks and payoffs in Maryland. Nixon was asked about his two-hour meeting with the vice president Saturday and said “it is, of course, not appropriate for me to discuss what the subject was.” “We went over a number of matters of mutual interest in which he has responsibilities," Nixon declared.

they’ll go back to public schools this winter. They just couldn’t get the work done in three hours at the professional school.” Mrs. Whitfield jumped. Barry Williams, taking advantage of a lull in the shooting, had grabbed a baseball and broke a plate rack at the back of a stand. Indiana Traffic Toll Still Climbs By THE ASSOC IA TED PRESS Indiana Traffic Deaths 1,118 Sept. 6 Last Year 1,031 By THE ASSOC/A TED PRESS A Gibson County woman has died at an Evansville hospital several hours after being injured in a car-truck crash on U.S. 41 seven miles north of Evansville. The victim was Hazel Lucas. 74, of Owensville. State police said she had stopped her car in the median, attempted to cross into the other lane and turned into the path of a semi-trailer truck. The accident occurred shortly after noon Tuesday and she died about eight hours later. Brenda J. Fagan, 23, Jacksonville, 111., was killed Tuesday in the crash of two trucks at the junction of Indiana 64 and Indiana 37 in Crawford County. Her husband, David, 23, a passenger, was not seriously injured. Police said the Fagan truck attempted to pass the other vehicle on the right, the two trucks sideswiped and the Fagan vehicle went off the road. Mrs. Fagan was thrown from the truck.
