Cardinals Hope To Bring Offense Back To Game

LOU IS (A P) - Don Coryell will bring offense back to St. Louis, but the question is whether the Cardinals can outscore their National Football League opponents. Coryell, whose college teams averaged 33.7 points a game for 15 years, inherits a team which ranked next-to-last among 26 NFL clubs in 1972 defense. While the club’s attack was equally ignominious, an improving line and the passing of Jim Hart plus Coryell’s propensity for a wide-open game make an improvement on offense seem certain. “I won’t say defense isn’t important, because it certainly is,” says Coryell, whose aerialminded teams at San Diego Sate won 104 of 125 games, lost 19 and tied 2 in 12 seasons. “But the only way I know to beat an opponent is to score touchdowns,” adds the 48-year-old mentor. “The quickest way is to throw. I feel we have the people to do it.” Coryell’s style, patterned after the pros while at San

Diego, is to the delight of the 29-year-old Hart, who blossomed as an NFL quarterback in 1970 and afterward spent two frustrating seasons as a some-times-starter. “I think Jimmy can throw the ball as well as anyone in the league,” says Coryell, who announced early he’ll go with Hart ahead of veteran Tim Van Galder and rookie Gary Keithley. “We feel we also have fine receivers," Coryell says. “I’ve been extremely well pleased with our offensive line, because I feel it’s a young line and one that will improve.” Receivers Jackie Smith, an 11-year tight end, and younger speedsters Walker Gillette, Mel Gray and Bobby Moore brighten the Coryell outlook. Another matter is the running, where John Roland and Donny Anderson are high in mileage and only rookie Terry Metcalf looks ready to render real aid. Coryell’s plan calls for the utilization of backs as receivers. Anderson does the club’s punting and is hard to stop

close to the goal, where the Cardinals will employ the Wishbone T. Tackle Ernie McMillan, 33, is the elder statesman on an aggressive offensive line that also includes tackle Dan Dierdorf, center Wayne Mulligan and guards Tom Banks and Conrad Do bier. Depth is available to back those five, but along the defensive line rookies must fill more than one gap. Defensive end Don Brumm has retired at the age of 31; top draft choice Dave Butz has held out more than a month in negotiating a contract to play tackle, and end Ron Yankowski ahs been injured. The absences throw the burden on veteran tackles John Richardson and Bob Rowe, who are backed by rookies Bonnie Sloan and Harold Sampson, and on Martin Imhof at end. Coryell considers the pro ranks strikingly similar to the collegiate ranks insofar as coaching is concerned and welcomes the opportunity to improve on the club’s 4-9-1 record for 1972.
