Sales for the first half amounted to $307.7-million, compared to $201.2-million last year. Net income for the six months rose 31 per cent to $ 10.4-million, or 93 cents per share, compared to $7.9-mil-lion or 70 cents per share last year. Mr. Kringel stated that the results for the year to date are well ahead of expectations, and that construction activity and materials demand are expected to continue strong, despite an anticipated dip in home building. “As a result,” he said, “and barring adverse weather or unforeseen economic problems, we now estimate that our- earnings for 1973 will approximate an increase of 20 per cent above last year.” Mr. Kringel added that earnings from operations of the company’s Cement & Construction- Materials Group are 34 per cent above last year, reaching an all-time record in this traditional part of Lone Star’s business. The National Building Centers Group more than doubled its operating profit over last year, aided by new acquisitions as well as internal growth. The International Group, with cement operations in South America, recorded a 58 per cent increase over its six-month- profit level - last year, due principally to price recovery and higher volume in Argentina. Lone Star Industries is a diversified company with four operating groups, and with total annual sales now running at a rate of more than $600-million. The Cement & Construction Materials Group is one of the major U.S. producers of cement, aggregates and concrete. The National Building Centers Group is a leading distributor of building materials and home improvement products through more than 140 retail stores and Home Care Centers in Florida, the Southwest, Minnesota and California.
