Opening lead — king of diamonds. It was impossible to anticipate the type of error Sylvia might make next. Sylvia bid some hands well, played some dummies passably, and defended acceptably on occasion. But her partners nevertheless always seemed perched on a volcano, never knowing what catastrophe might befall them next or when some peculiar process of thought would take possession of her and topple everything in sight. These adventures into the unknown occurred with distressing frequency, and most

members of the club trembled fearfully whenever they cut Sylvia as a partner. They knew that the weirdest things might happen, and they also knew that no amount of prayer or cajolery could swerve Sylvia from her predestined course. But with all that, Sylvia occasionally accomplished a feat that would serve for months as a conversation piece among the other members. Here is an example of the kind of play that made Sylvia the darling of the club. West led a diamond and Sylvia won it with the ace and cashed six clubs, West discarding two spades and a heart, while East discarded three spades. Sylvia now played the Q-K-A of hearts and then, having seen the jack fall and proceeding under the delusion that her nine was a trick, she tried to cash it. This inadvertence had a devastating effect on West, for this was the position when Sylvia played the nine:

West had no safe discard when the heart was led. Whatever he discarded, dummy would score the last two tricks.

Mrs. Betty Watts of R.R. 1, Cloverdale, and Max L. Watts of Charleston, III., wish to announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Diana Lynn, to Sheldon T. Guthridge, the son of Top Guthridge of R.R. 2, Cloverdale. Miss Watts is a 1973 graduate of South Putnam High School. Mr. Guthridge is a 1968 graduate of Fillmore High School and now farms. A July 21 wedding has been planned and will be held at the New Providence Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. No invitations are being sent. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend.

DEAR ABBY: I am a 22-year-old woman. I am working part-time, doing graduate work in college, and also taking care of a terminally ill mother at night. Two months ago I gave up my newborn illegitimate daughter for adoption. Her father was my one and only relationship, and he doesn’t know about the birth. I wanted more than anything in the world to keep my baby, but felt that since I had givefi her life, I had an obligation to give her a decent future. Abby, there was no way I could have done it at that time. While I carried her, I would stroke my stomach hoping she would somehow be aware of it, as it was the only physical affection I would ever be able to give her. I might add that I, too, am adopted. Maybe that’s why I made the decision in favor of adoption. My parents were absolutely wonderful. . The people who adopted my baby were childless. I heard they both wept when she was handed over to them. My question: How can I learn to live with the thought that I have a child somewhere in the world, without yearning to see her, and without wondering what she is like? Do mothers ever get over a thing like this? EMPTY ARMS DEAR EMPTY: Don’t dwell on your loss—dwell on your child’s gain. As an adopted child, with happy memories of your own childhood, you have answered your own questions. Now you can put yourself in the place of your natural mother who loved you so much she gave you up for your sake. Have patience. Your day will come, and you will be rewarded for your unselfish decision. DEAR ABBY: I have a 5-year-old nephew who really worries me. He is exceptionally bright, but I don’t know where he got this thing about money. He is absolutely fascinated with it.

He has a “piggy” bank which he can open himself, and he makes a game out of counting his money. He has no interest in toys, he just plays with his money. I say it’s unhealthy. His parents think it’s cute. He gets a wild look in his eye when he handles money. It’s really frightening. Neither of his parents is money mad. Would I be out of line if I told his parents they should try to encourage him to find another hobby? Or am I concerned over nothing? CONCERNED DEAR CONCERNED: A preoccupation with anything can be unhealthy. Tell his parents of your concern. But it’s even money they won’t do anything about it. DEAR ABBY: My husband is a hair stylist, and he works long hours six days a week. He is 26, bom and raised in Oklahoma. There is no water shortage here so there’s no reason for him to go 3, 4 and 5 days without a bath, but he does. I have tried being subtle about it, like running his bath water for him, but it doesn’t work. He just lets the water get cold. He has oily skin and all the problems that go with it: blackheads and pimples. I have changed the sheets and bathed myself, and still he wants to climb into bed with me night after night without having bathed. I have told him I think he needs a bath but he says he is comfortable and doesn’t want to change his body chemistry. It’s just about ruined our sex life. And then he has the nerve to say I am not as “sexy” as I was when he married me. Any suggestions? TURNED OFF DEAR TURNED: Tell him that if he doesn’t want to change his body chemistry he will have to change his address. [Or you’ll change your name.]
