some $200,000, with both the men’s and women's champions receiving equal reward-$25,000 This would make the U. S. Hie Nastase of Romania, received $25,000 while Mrs. King, the ladies' victor, had to settle for $10,000. This is the sort of female discrimination that has had the bouncy, outspoken matron from Long Beach, Calif., running a high temperature for years. Billie Jean, who won her fifth Wimbledon title 10 days ago, has long insisted that the women players never got a fair shake from the various tournament promotes and she has led strikes which made her persona non grata with the authorities. It is Billie Jean’s contention that, while admittedly not on par with the more powerful men, the ladies are equal in gate appeal. Their smart ballerina skirts and their flair for back-court rallies in contrast to the men's slam-bang game, she argues, contribute measurably to the attendance. Her point was borne out in 1971 when, after most of the top male stars had either failed to play or survive the later rounds, the gate at Forest Hills was saved by the presence of the then 16-year-old Chris Evert. a sensation. 3 Grid Stars To Attend DPU Three highly regarded Chicago area football players have enrolled at DePauw. Greg Hauptly, 6'3, 220 pound offensive guard from Arlington High School, Arlington, Illinois, was also named to his All Conference Baseball Team, an honor he gained earlier in football.
